What are the 1 0f 5 new ships we get to choose from?

In the 49th Newsletter it was said we would be able to choose from one of 5 new ships when the game is released but I haven't seen anything of what they are or if we get to choose ect.

"Being a Beta backer is the only way you will be able to play Elite: Dangerous until 16th December. In addition to that and the other existing Beta benefits such as Mercenary Edition and automatic permit to visit Sol, today we are also announcing:
25% off in-game ship insurance for life to all our Beta backers
free access to one of the 5 new ships when it’s released!"

We will get to choose tomorrow or how ever they do it right?

I never understood that either. It can be read in many ways.

It could be read as pick from one of 5 new ships that will be introduced as freebie, but then i would hope they are all tiny ships, otherwise the backers will get highly annoyed.

It could be they are ships that would normally be restricted by faction and rank, but since we already have the courier and the fed dropship in and those require ranks, its strange.

But since we are close to release, and no sight nor sound of any 5 new ships, you have to wonder what they are talking about.

Have they really held back 5 ships that will be restricted to alpha/beta backers? Hard to believe.

I sense an opportunity here for further wild speculation.

Of course, it could just be marketing talk... you know, marketing, closely equated with lies, but its not lies, its just marketing. :D

And just to quote the relevant section...

free access to one of the 5 new ships when it’s released!

That says "when its released" which in most languages would indicate tomorrow.

Marketing?

Another way of interpreting it is this. 5 new ships that anyone can purchase with 'real' money in the store, but backers get to choose one of them for free.

As ED has become an MMO FD need to fund ongoing server running and development through micro-transactions such as selling paint jobs and perhaps soon ships too.

"free access to one of the 5 new ships when it’s released!" "it's" meaning the game to me. Otherwise wouldn't "when they're released" be a better choice of words?

Also in Newsletter 50 it then goes on to say "
If you can’t already play, becoming a Beta backer is the only way you will be able to play Elite: Dangerous until 16th December. In addition to that and the other existing Beta benefits such as Mercenary Edition and automatic permit to visit Sol, Beta backers also receive 25% off in-game ship insurance for life, plus free access to one of the 5 new ships we announced last week!

Elite: Dangerous will be released on 16th December, so there are also only 27 days left to pre-order the game and get The Elite: Dangerous Mercenary Edition additional content and benefit from the £4.99 discount. Available to buy now.

Which would lead me to believe we know what the ships are. I must be missing a post of what they are somewhere, If someone could point me to the post of what the 5 ships are I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Yeah, that's what I assumed too. The way they stated was we'd get "access" to one of five ships. Which was confusing. I had thought we already had access to all ships in game, as long as we had the credits.

Come on, this is ED not SC.

After the 16th December we will continue to update with more polish and content such as the playable ships we committed to in our Kickstarter campaign – in fact I’m delighted to be able to tell you that we are now planning to eventually have 30 playable ships in Elite: Dangerous, 5 more than we committed to in Kickstarter.

You will get one of the 5 new ships when its released. After. Eventually.

I read it is meaning: When the new ships are released in game, we are able to buy one of them once without it costing us any credits.

I.e. All 5 new ships will be listed as 'free' until we choose to buy(*) one, at which point they will all become listed with their intended normal in game credit cost like all the others.

Based on that I presume they will be released at the same time.

The devs confirmed that the ships are not going to be microtransactions and will be available in the usual way.

I dunno, I interpret this as:

"You will receive free access" (not a free ship, but access to one) so possibly suspending the rank/reputation/permit requirements to purchase the ship with CR.
"when it's released" (as in when the ships are released) not the game release because "it's" refers to the ships in the same sentence.

Choice of words is a bit cryptic though..

I agree with this particular interpretation.

Well as a Kickstarter Premium Beta backer I got a Founders World Permit and when I started in the Gamma I was given a choice of starting points and ships depending on what I wanted to do. I plumped for Independent Trader and to start at Lave. I then appeared at Lave along with my Free Eagle in my nice new Free Cobra Mk III with extended Cargo Bays (18t), but only 100cr. :)

As for this particular statement it is a little unclear. I read it as at launch they may well be 5 new ships and if you pre-ordered you may get to choose one as your starting ship or as a replacement for the Freagle ;) It is a bit vague to be fair. We'll all find out tomorrow. :)
