Playing with other people towards the same goal? You can't do that by yourself.
that would depend on the group, the one i'm in is PvE focused so i know when playing in that mode that any human players i see are not a threat as they won't ever attack me outside of a conflict zone. there are other groups that focus on PvP and the advantage there is that you can get together to practice combat without being accused of griefing someone.
groups can act as a sort of players club, sharing hints and tips via their own forums, some even have their own group exclusive trading app's to share trade data and increase the earnings per trade run.
so as a bounty hunter how does that work for me ?

Unless you find a Pirates Group who is happy to have you on board as a challenge..
Other than that, 'open play' is where you want to be anyways, to kill NPC and CMDR pilots with a wanted rating.
in a pvp group you could practice your combat under controlled conditions, for example the first player to lose 25% hull is the loser. you can also share information on the best places to hunt, locations of human targets that are mentioned on the news feed in game and more importantly you could find out the best places to get high grade ship parts without having to visit every settled system in the galaxy as if someone in your group has just found a station selling a bit of kit you are looking for they can tell you about it over group com channels such as team speak without you having to spend time out of the game hunting through the forums for the same info.
Well it's obvious init! The more ships, the more guns.... and guns kill humans.
