what are the advantages of ranking up in a faction ?

Seeing all those nice green dots on the radar, more diverse missions, and the pleasant greeting when you contact the station. If there are more tangible ones I'm not aware of them.

Oh...if you mean the major factions, yeah the faction specific ships.

Better paying missions, cheaper fuel (apparently), access to faction ships (possibly weapons) and system permits. Im sure there are more.

That's not a very high rank though. I'm only at Lt Commander, and I've been offered several permits. If I had any money they'd probably let me buy a dropship too.

I ve made it to chief petty officer and not really noticed any of that :/

I had 3 system permits by then if you are on about Fed side... You may want to look out for "Federal contact" on the BB - just take the mission and it auto completes giving you your system permits.

My suspicion is that gradually more rank-locked items will become available. Particularly weapon variants and ship internals.

When allied with a faction that has a shipyard, outfitting etc. is often cheaper. Missions are also more frequent and diverse. With the major factions you also gain access to their unique ships.

Something interesting. I just went from Lt Commander to Post Commander.

Now some on these boards have posted that that's the highest rank, but I'm wondering if that's the case. What was interesting is it's the first time the Feds actually gave me a congratulatory message and said that it was a "field promotion" That makes me wonder if it's not the highest rank but rather the first of the true officer ranks.

This is supposition on my part, but AFAIK in RL everything below Warrant Officer is a non-commissioned officer - an NCO. Also in RL a Post Commander is equivalent to a Colonel or a Navy Captain. Given the size of the Federation fleet I's be very surprised if there were not Brigadiers, Generals of various stars and/or Admirals/Grand Moffs etc.

Also if Post Commander were the highest rank it would mean that there were fewer ranks in ED than in FE which would be a backward step.

Iff my supposition is correct then it give credence to the idea that there might be more rank locked stuff to find.
