What are the differences between Elite and SC?

Hi all, first post. So, I'll be pledging both, and playing both, of course..but, what are the main differences between the two? I'm an EVE player, so I like my PVP..I love player-run economy, and as a former SWG player, I love flying and ship interiors. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Welcome to the forums, we're a lovely bunch despite some of the cat-calling you may see from time-to-time.... :)

Pretty much everything that I was going to say has already been said by others in regards to the differences. I'll be playing both games like crazy as the Wing Commander series and the Elite series were my favorite games of all time when I was young and nothing makes me happier than seeing the return of the space combat genre under the helm of its two greatest developers! If I had anything to ask it'd be for some kind of cross-game promotion like Star Citizen did with the Ultima: Shroud of the Avatar game involving Elite. I'd love to have something to remind me of each game while I'm playing the other.

But, yeah, I expect a more 'realistic' experience out of Elite and a much more 'loose' ruleset with Star Citizen but I fully expect both to swallow my free time and attention fully into their fully-realized universes. Game on, all!

Thanks so much for the welcomes and all the info, I really appreciate it. Yeah, I think most people will play both. I would not be surprised to see a sort of "black market" between players, finding a way to trade items/ships etc between the two universes. Its gonna be a lot of fun

I will! (be surprised, that is). But trading favours - yeah I can see that happening :D And perhaps some crossover fan fiction etc.

It certainly is :)

I think its safe to say that EDs vision is 'pushing the grounds of realism without sacrificing gameplay'. By that i mean Frontiers starting point is to create a future universe which is as realistic as possible. The only aspects they will remove or amend from the game are realistic aspects which will detract from gameplay.

By definition this means PvP has become the trickiest gaming aspect to install into ED. The most realistic universe would have full PvP but we all know that games need some kind of control on PvP.

It looks like SC on the otherhand has focused most of their game design around PvP and havent paid much attention to realism.

Ehh talking about realism..you do know that SC features a fully Newtonian flight model right or that in game communications are confined by distance right?

Coming to "realism" i tend to think that both games are at about the same level.

One major difference between ED and SC is that ED is a cult game that has 30 years of existence. And that, that really has weight, because the master Braben, reserve us, a lot of surprises.

I have to agree with Ross. I also don't think that selling Star Citizen as a 'PvP' game works when there's already been mentioned that players will be able to select via a slider their level of desire for PvP in-game. So, while there will be PvP in both games you're more than welcome to indulge mainly in PvE in both if that's your wish.

Well generally the only people selling SC as a "PvP" game is the ones who dosen't know anything about SC :D

SC is as much a PvP game as ED is.

ED will allow me to go everywhere I want, online, with no risk of PvP. Perhaps this will require being in a solo private group, I'm not sure if a proper PvE mode will be implemented, but at least there is an alternative for when I really don't want even a remote chance of being engaged in PvP.

SC will always have some chance of PvP happening even in the safest sectors, and in the less safe sectors the "PvP slider" will be mostly useless.

So, while SC might perhaps be mainly focused on PvE, it still won't let me escape PvP; thus, I will never play it online unless that design aspect is changed. ED, on the other hand, will allow me to completely escape PvP, more or less at will, while playing online, so ED is the space sim game I will be playing online.

Personally, I look at a game that is mainly PvE, but with a slight (though unavoidable) chance of being forced into PvP, as a PvP game (and typically completely avoid it).

You can play Elite in solo online mode if you want only PVE.
You can also play online with your friends only. :)

You can run SC as a private server with no chance of PvP.

Which is what I said. As far as I'm concerned SC doesn't have an online mode, since I will not engage in a game mode where I can't escape PvP.

Thus, ED is the game I will turn to in order to play a space sim online.

So turn the PvP slider in SC up all the way and you won't be able to escape PvP. There you have it. ;)
