What are the Fed' "piggies" for?

A couple of days ago I was exploding something with my FdL and it occured to me how many mat's I was leaving lying around and I started to have a think about that.
What I needed was a ship that was, basically, an FdL but with at least one big slot free for carrying limpets and one or two small slots free for Collectors.

My first thought was "Python" so I bought yet another Krait Mk2 and built it into something suitable.

Thing is, half way through the build, it occured to me that this might've been an opportunity to dust off my FGS and put it to good use.
But then I looked at the internals... and sent it back to my "scrapyard" in Tionisla.

I had a look at the FDS and FAS and they have slightly better internals than the FGS but, then again, they don't have hardpoints to match the Krait.
So, the FGS has the hardpoints but not the internals and the FDS/FAS have the internals but not the hardpoints.

Le sigh.

So, on with the Krait build.
Finished.
Works.
Happy days.

Leaves me wondering what people actually do with the fed' piggies though.

Generally, it seems like they're all intended to be overgrown Vultures but, these days, we've got ships like the Krait and Phantom which can do that job better, and carry out more diverse roles too.
And, of course, there's always been the Python.

I get that they make good hull-tanks so I suppose there's always Tharoid pew-pew but is that it, or are there other things they're actually good at?

And yes, I realise there'll be people who go exploring in them or haul cargo in them "just cos" but I'm asking what they're actually good at.

Variety I guess, I don't have a use for them either, although the corvette is probably my favourite multi-role.

I just use Pythons or Cutters when getting the job done is more important than variety.

You might have had a look at the Alliance Trio. The aChief has the same slots as an FAS but with more guns/firepower. That's what I use. I can fit a bunch of extra gadgets in an effective PvE build. Give those a review before you are completely settled.

Gah!

I was going to start a thread asking for suggestions for which ship to use but I thought it'd just end-up being a couple of pages of people saying "Get a Python, dummy".

Completely forgot about the Alliance ships. 😣
I even have a Chieftain and a Challenger parked-up in Tionisla and it looks like the Challenger would definitely have been viable.
Might have a go at building that now.

I hate flying the Python. I would pass over decent hauling jobs, because it would result in my having to fly the Pygthon. The K-Mk II solved that issue.

The Alliance trio have a lot to offer. For replacing an FdL I would certainly go for the aChief, but I have little doubt that the other two ships will do the pew plenty good. Enjoy.
