I have not played Elite Dangerous yet. I have a logtech F310 controller. It has 2 joysticks, 1 hat (8 possible positions), and 12 buttons, with a mode switch that can redefine what the buttons mean. I will probably use the 2 joysticks for movement and probably the hat also. I am planning to use the controller, keyboard, and possibly the mouse to (because I am left handed). Since their is a huge number of possible commands my question is what is the most used 12 so I can map them into my controller? The lesser used commands I can use my keyboard for. I could also put the commands into 2 category's such as combat/other.

- Main engine throttle. (forward)
- Lateral/vertical thrusters (x4)
- Yaw
- Primary and secondary fire
- Firegroups
- Landing gear
- Targeting (next and previous)
- UI panel navigation.
You can change the control scheme as you choose. It's very simple to do so and as you get more experienced in the game you can change it to suit your needs. The game also has context sensitive controls, so if you're navigating a panel display, it won't change your firegroups, for example. You can also set button combinations that do different things, i.e. button 1 + a shoulder button does something different from button 1 or the shoulder button on their own.
