Powerplay What are the next steps after a controlled system is undermined?

When a controlled system has been undermined, what are the next steps? Does it need to be undermined again before it can be prepared for expansion? The genesis of my question is simply this. If I am pledged to a certain power and I undermine my neighbor, how much time has to pass before that system can be taken over?

PowerPlay doesn't quite work like that. Every Thursday at 07:00 game time the PowerPlay cycle resets and a calculation is run to determine the outcome of the cycle. It works on a budget - if a power has a surplus after the cycle, regardless of how many undermined systems they had, none of those systems end up in jeopardy. If the power has a deficit, even if they had no undermined systems at the end (cancelled systems are not counted as undermined), they have their most expensive systems put into turmoil and risk losing them if they end another cycle with a deficit.

As such the answer to your last question is "it depends". In the best case scenario, from your perspective, it will take two cycles before the system can be prepared by another power. In the worst case scenario it will never happen.

Got it. So, to sum up, if I've made my home base at some place in my pledged power's corner of the galaxy, it could take quite a bit of time before I/we are able to make that space feel less claustrophobic and more neighborly.

Exactly. Depending on where it is, it could even end up being outright impossible. And if you were inserted into a system that was already exploited, I wouldn't expect that power to be super accommodating in terms of leaving the system - they were there first. But it would always be a good idea to talk to the power that exploits it, because there are systems that a power would NEVER abandon, and there are systems they would like abandon.
