What are the optimal 'default' options Oculus users should be using in SteamVR?

Hi all!

A number of users here have said things praising SteamVR performance and comparing it favourably to Oculus runtime. Saying it has come on a long way.
I have a couple of games where I can run via SteamVR or offical Oculus Runtime e.g. Dirt Rally games, Elite Dangerous, Walking Dead S&Ss etc. and I see no comparison, with the Oculus default runtime being noticably better than SteamVR's. So it has been my experience that whenever I compare 'like for like', using the Oculus runtime is always noticably better than using SteamVR for games.

Facebook Reality Labs is very well supported and John Carmack, with his Elite optimisation skills was Oculus CEO until recently and still consults for them so you would expect top-drawer optimised runtime software, even compared to SteamVR's software.

I also don't believe that it's Oculus hardware vs others because Karl Gosling ran tests comparing performance of the Q2 (over Link) and G2, where he set the resolution of both as close as possible in SteamVR and found there was negligabIe difference in performance. Therefore, WMR devices and Oculus devices appear to perform equally well using SteamVR.

It's obviously in my best interest for SteamVR to be as efficient as possible (games tend to be cheaper more often for example), so I am hoping it's just a setting or few that I need to tweak in SteamVR.

This is how I have my settings in SteamVR:
  • General render is the default
  • App specific render settings - set to whatever I would have in Oculus Home
  • Runtime - Open Oculus

Is that the correct for Oculus users?

Thanks!

Why run SteamVR in situations where you can run directly from Oculus? I don't see how adding an extra layer to graphics pipeline would ever improve performance, except if it's something like 3DMigoto which turns off shaders (thus reducing graphics load).

I only use SteamVR when I have no other choice.
