Newcomer / Intro What are those Taipan?

I was bounty hunting and there were 2 wings of System Authority Vessels plus some other pirates shooting an Anaconda.
There were at least 8 ships engaging the Anaconda.
I joined in and suddenly, out of nowhere, this Taipan ship appears and start shooting me with extreme prejudice and agility.
I managed to shoot it down and got no bounty.
Who/what are they??

SLFs can be annoying and dangerous.
Once they're on your six, it can be extremely difficult to get rid of them, particularly in a bigger or less agile ship. There are three ways of getting rid of them relatively easily.
1) turrets
2) your own SLF if you have the right ship
3) if you pay attention and spot them in time - shooting them down as they are taking off from the enemy ship and are vulnerable

Ship launched fighter, probably from the Anaconda? You got it's attention due to being more dangerous than the System authority and assorted pirates.
Aha, so they are fighters.
I doubt I was the more dangerous in the pack. There were 2 police anacondas, some Vipers and one Imperial Clipper shooting at it and I was on my humble Cobra Mk III.
Probably it came after me because I was the easier target 🤣

Really?
Then I was extremely lucky because I managed to shoot it down with gimballed pulse and beam lasers on my poor Cobra III after it downed my shields and carved his name on my hull.

Really.
Remember the Cobra III doesn’t usually count as bigger or less agile.

Method 4 for dealing with them is blow up the ship that launched them, the SLF pilot can’t control it from his escape pod and the fighter blows up when it loses its telepresence link.

Yeah, what aRJay said - Cobra is fine for fighting SLFs. But once you get into bigger ships, you will have to start thinking about hiring your own SLF pilot or at least be much more vigilant, because there will be situations where the enemy having an SLF will be the tipping balance between winning or losing a fight. :)

But as long as you are in a small-ish and agile ships, you don't have to worry too much.
Although you have to worry a little bit. SLFs have an insane damage output for their size, so it's really not recommended to ignore them completely. Letting them work on your shields unimpeded while you are focusing on their mothership is a quick way to the rebuy screen :D

4) blow away the mothership

Before you open fire on an Anaconda, Gunship, Krait or Chieftain, you should check whether or not they have a fighter hanger. You do that in the 4th tab of your left panel. Scroll up to see the bottom of the list. it's normally 3 to 6 from the bottom if there is one. When the mothership is under fire from the police, the fighter often just hangs around, mainly behind you, just waiting for you to open fire.

The best strategy is wait until the police have the mothership nearly dead. Put 4 pips to shields and open fire. You should be able to tank the fighter until the mothership blows. If you go after the fighter, they often have chaff and fast charging shields, so they take a lot of chasing down. By the time you get it, the police have finished the mothership, so you wasted your time. Beam lasers work the best against the fighters.

Yes, as I said, I was very lucky to have shot down that fighter.
I think I got him because I was almost dead after he took my shield down. I had nothing to lose so I turned head on and shot everything I had thinking if I die, he will at least get hurt.
I shot him down, just as the police shot the Anaconda, I got the bounty and went home with a cracked canopy.
