Hello learned friends - I've been chugging away on VR Elite for a while now and my poor little 970 has held up like a trooper. But I'm debating if I should pull the trigger on a new gfx card while prices are relatively low. Sadly I've not won the lottery as far as I know, so I'm wondering what is the next incremental upgrade you would consider worth going for - has anyone gone from a 970 to a 1060 or 1070 say? Will I notice a marked improvement in performance? Or should I just keep waiting for 1080's to stop being ridiculous.. Thanks for any insights.

I went from a 970 to a 1080 and was glad I decided against a 1070. I think with a 1070 you aren’t going to get 90FPS unless you have fairly low/ medium settings but will be able to increase quality settings a fair bit over a 970.
If you are on an i5 unless a recent 6 core or an older i7 you would struggle to push a 1080 at 90FPS in some circumstances anyway, such as in an instance with a few other people when docked. In that case a 1070 would make more sense anyway as a 1080 would just give you scope for even higher settings over a 1070 at 45FPS.
A 1060 probably isn’t that different to a 970 to make the expense worthwhile.
If you do want a 1080 you may have a narrow window because there aren’t many left new in stock (in the U.K. anyway).
To summarise my advice would be:
6 core i5 or recent i7 = 1080 if you can afford it and want 90FPS.
Otherwise get a 1070.

No problem. One other thing that might be worth considering if you did decide to wait or spot a bargain is the RTX 2070. It is very similar performance wise to a 1080 (a bit better in some benchmarks a bit worse in others) but actually cheaper in some places.
I’ve not seen anyone say they have one in these forums though so you’d be a bit of a pioneer Elite VR wise but something to consider, especially when the 10XX cards are all gone.
