What can I do to avoid this ?

I only have 30-40 hours in (Newbie) and since I got rid of my Sidewinder, I thought I would be more careful about dying. Yesterday I decided to drop off at a random Strong Signal Source and there was a bunch of Gold Containers and the nothing else on my Scanner. As I was about to pick one up, about ~5 to 10 ships appeared on my Scanner and destroyed me in a matter of seconds.

How can I avoid this scenario ? Avoid dropping off at Strong signal Source ? Avoid picking-up illegal/stolen cargo ? Was this just bad luck ? Specifically avoid illegal/stolen Gold containers ?

yes, it's a trap, but you can scoop one and get away if you're quick...

SSS can be dangerous, unless you're a good pilot, have great shields and/or lots of shield-cell-banks.

The first one of those traps I found I got in, scoop up an AI Relic and got out before they laid a shot on me (woohoo! nearly doubled my total cash at the time). But on subsequent visits I became space stuff...

SSS can be quite nasty. Probably best avoided until you're in a wing of heavily armed ships!

Strong signal sources are for tougher ships and wings, weak signal sources should be better to start off with for you.

If you see a load of containers of gold, and you're not willing to fight hard for them, run away (optionally screaming like a squid)

Strong signal sources always mean big ships, usually lots of them. They can be hostile or not.

The whole point of SSS is for player wings in smaller ships or players with large ships to have a challenging encounter. So in the future its something you can do with a friend.

To do some SSS or USS adventuring, I figure you need a ship that can fight or flight. A ship with high thruster speed will help you run away in trap scenarios where fighting is hopeless (I use a Cobra for SSS/USS adventuring).
Or come with a 'conda fully loaded for bear, if you can afford it.

If one was to answer your question truthfully, I would say avoid strong signal sources unless you're armed to the teeth and a darn good pilot. I barely made it away from one of those myself. Felt pretty exhilarating too.
