What can you actually do in this game?

I've watched a couple of minutes of youtube videos.
And Iam wondering - what do you actually do in this game?

Watching the videos, it felt very empty to me. As if there wasn't anything to do, except for vandering around.

Just a number of sectors (all of them looking same - asteroid field OR space station).

When I typed "Elite: Dangerous piracy" in youtube, I saw videos where the player randomly flew around universe and was killing anybody else who got in range.

When I typed "Elite: Dangerous trading" in youtube, player was just using that "booster" engine to travel "quickly" for the whole time.

I know that you can either vander from station to station, buying low & selling high.
Or you can vander around the sectors, shooting other people.
But is that all? :S :S :S

I know that this game is already playable for people who bought that expensive version.
How is it? What do you do? What have you done today? What is your goal? What is your dream? What playstyles are there?

How's the exploration aspect? Is it like X series, where you just have a bunch of sectors, that are all the same, just station products are different?
Or are there actual things to discover, scary cartel hideouts in asteroid fields, wreck fields, maybe LOTS of small space farms, on asteroids? (just examples)

Iam going to buy it anyway once it's released (I heard that player will be able to control capital ships IN FUTURE, and will be able to walk around stations/ships/planets, and will be able to fly to surface of planets with their ships, and fly around the mountains and oceans, which sounds interesting).

No offence intended Scimitar, but your questions can all be answered by reading any of the numerous press releases, FAQs and Design Discussion Archive threads which cover the different game mechanics and play styles in great detail. You should do some searches here and take a look at the main Frontier site.

Very broadly, aside from trading and "fighting", you will also be able to:
  • Mine minerals, refine and sell them
  • Explore new systems and sell mapping data
  • Operate as a bounty hunter (distinct from random fighting)
  • Run salvage operations
  • Engage in piracy (also distinct from random fighting and bounty hunting)

im finding crashing and getting killed is pretty easy
god know what it is going to be like when I have a billion stars to die on

If after reading the numerous press releases, videos, etc you're still not sure what Elite is, then I think this game will be beyond your tastes in gaming :)

Elite is THE game ;)

You can test the dogfighting and ship load outs with a few of the ships that will be in the final game.
You can test docking with a couple of the stations that will be in the final game.
You can test the very basics of trading with a bare minimum market in a tiny fraction of the systems that will be in the final game.
You can test the core networking systems with a lot of high number of people in a very small area.

All the videos on Youtube are of people testing those things in alpha or glorified alpha (which is where we are now).

What will you be able to do in this game is probably a more relevant question, and it's one you won't find the answer to in Youtube gameplay videos. The links from atomichorror should be much more useful there.

Its in testing stage, all we are doing is testing stuff, so all there is to do atm

is wander about the few star systems
earn money to buy bigger and better ships and weapons of which there is only a small taster percentage.
And to earn money which you can either trade, by flying to one spacestation buying something and taking it to another for profit, or by entering warzones and killing people for bountys.
And a combination of all.

That is pretty much all you can do,

My goal has been to earn enough money to buy a decent ship and upgrade the weapons and stuff, test it out. Which takes many hours. I have over 30 hours in doing just that. Many people will have 1,00s of hours in.

Its a work in progress,
Originally all you could do is a few little combat scenarios
Then over time they added space stations so you could dock
More ships and weapons to buy
hyperspace
Then trading commodities.
travel
Multiplayer
More systems to explore
And more is being added every month.

In a few weeks we will have communication, possibly police and whatever else is planned.

What have you done today?

I jumped out to the Styx system to have a look around, had a look round the planets there just in case there was anything interesting (there wasn't) then jumped to a distress beacon where I engaged some criminal NPCs for bounty. Someone attacked me (possibly reacting to my scanning them; they had no bounty so I wouldn't have opened fire as I'm a peaceable sort, but I like to scan anyone and everyone because I'm cautious) and I destroyed their ship, but it wasn't exactly a fair fight. I agonised over that for a minute or two then reasoned that they had it coming. Then I was ambushed by some more NPCs (three missile-lobbing Cobras) while jumping around and had to run.

I left Styx and went back to trading round my usual routes. At Aulin station an eejit was camped outside in an Anaconda ganking hapless passers-by. I tried to kill them but my weapons weren't denting its shields so I jumped out to pick up more firepower. When I returned they were gone, so I waited round for a bit then did some more trading.

My goal for the game is (and has been since Frontier) to explore, so I'm feeling a bit constrained in the current small set of systems.

Way back in the olden days there was a competition called the Arried - Diquer Rally (might have been Arries, now I come to think of it, which sounds better...) No prizes for guessing where they got the name. The idea was to chart the shortest and fastest route between those two (widely distant) systems. It occurs to me that we can do this sort of thing as a multiplayer event in Elite now. Should be very cool to race through a thousand light-years of sparsely populated and dangerous systems on the fringe of the inhabited sphere...

hmm well you seem to have a negative outlook to start with but I hope this helps

1. there will be missions etc .. obtained from a bulletin board where you can do various different things ranging from transporting rich passengers to assassinating important diplomatic figures.

2. there is obviously exploration (who know's what you will find out there ? :p)

3. progression the feeling of piloting various new ships and upgrading them to a standard you are happy with and increasing your "rank" and skills in space fights etc.

4. alien races to discover, it has been announced that the THARGOIDS will be in elite dangerous.

5. Choose a side .. federation or Empire .. various bonuses will come along with each faction. as will new ships.

6. The planned expansions ... read about them.

7. im guessing your a star citizen fanboy.

8. Mining asteroids etc to find valuable minerals to sell ...

9. Events injected by frontier themselves for the player community

10. distress signals.. never know what your gonna find there.

Sounds like fun, I bet bigger guilds will do things like that. But most of the people when more systems are released will just spread out to avoid pirates. In games like Elite very low percent of people want PvP, usually those are refugees from EVE Online but they will soon learn that there is noone to hunt other than themselves. They have a giggle or two now by camping the systems, after the police is introduced they will move to some corner low security systems and probably fight amongst themselves day and night since nobody else will care.

No way! Star Citizen is a giant money void, with barely any advance at the game devenlopment.
Iam more of a singleplayer dude, been playing the X series by Egosoft for my whole life (seriously).

Thanks for all the replies, there's a lot more to ELITE than I thought. :)
Going to get it for sure, once it gets released (OFC will watch the forums for a while, just to get sure).

Also get Oculus Rift Developer Kit 2, you'll love the Elite so much more... ;)

I understand your questions and why you asked them, if you're not an old git like a lot of us and didn't play the earlier versions of the game in the eighties and nineties, then its going to be a bit confusing. It actually was in the beginning, with the first game, with the programmers running into the questions, "why don't you get three ships, a score, and extra life at 10,000?"

It was a groundbreaking game then, that's an understatement, and it doesn't really need to adjust too much to fashionable game play concepts now, because its "The Governor". The X series which I enjoyed a lot were, I think, actually written by Elite fans who were tired of waiting. Hence, "X - Beyond the Frontier".

The concept has always been about creating an absorbing and immersive backdrop that let's the player do his or her own thing, when you want to do it, not hemming you into specific character with restricted choices.

So, I think it will have all the elements that have been mentioned, but implemented in a deeper and more convincing way than they currently are, and it will have missions, most of which will I think be generated by the program, but some will be hand-coded and there's been talk of intrigue and secret organisations which you may become elegible to join, and hopefully have al sorts of adventures with. I believe there will strange and wonderful discoveries to be made in the depths of space, but this stuff is not available yet, and is unlikely to be openly tried and tested like the trading and combat etc, because it need to be kept mysterious by its very nature.

So I think your questions are completely reasonable, because its not going to be quite what any of us have seen before, but I think that's going to be a really good thing.

I think you'll love it, I hope so. :)

If you're an 'X' player from birth, then it's worth noting that without Elite there would be no 'X'. Simple as that.

Elite is the Granddaddy of them all, and it's being updated for the 21st Century thanks to the Kickstarter and most of us here. There is a lot to do in the game, most of which hasn't appeared yet but should start to once beta 1 is released on 29th July.

Watch, read, learn, and once you play I don't think you'll be disappointed. :)

You can play Elite: Dangerous single player too, if that is your preference.
