Hardware & Technical What control method do you use?

Hey guys! I'm just curious as to what kind of controller everyone here uses. K&M, gamepad, or joystick?

As for me, I used to use K&M controls the first few days of playing Elite, but now I use a Saitek Cyborg Graphite joystick. It only has four buttons other than the hat and the throttle, so I use a keyboard as well in order to make up for the lack of buttons. Kind of a funny story about how/why I got it, too, which I didn't really expect to type when I started making this thread.

I used to have a Saitek x45 (I guess I'm just nostalgically biased toward Saitek, hence why my new joystick is also Saitek) about 8-10 years ago, but I couldn't find it. Believe me, a few days after purchasing Elite, I remembered the x45, and I probably spent a good two or three hours searching every square inch of my house trying to find it. Attic, garage, basement, crawlspaces, you name it. I just couldn't find it. I did find a different joystick (No brand or model labels, which is strange), which made me hopeful that I would find the x45, but still no luck. I couldn't use the other joystick because it had a DA-15 connector that my computer had no ports for. I didn't have a lot of money for a new one, so I had to look around on eBay to find the Cyborg joystick I use now. It works pretty well so far, despite only being $22.

Sorry about the wall of text. Whenever I start typing, I have a bad habit of not knowing when to stop. If only that carried over to my essays in school.

Anyway, back to the original question: What control method do you use, and what brand/model?

I started out with K&M too, but i have a neuro condition and get tremors and spasms in my hands.. mouse really didnt work out too well for me lol. I had an old Saitek Gold 3D joystick lying around so moved to that, actually worked pretty well, and the deadzone settings are great for cancelling out most of my tremors. Once i decided the game was going to be a long term, regular thing for me, I went a little silly and got myself a Saitek X55 Rhino HOTAS.. had a wee bit of buyers remorse at the £169, but only until i had the beast unpacked, up and working.. Its an awesome piece of equipment, pretty extravagant for my budget, but i'd advise anyone who was thinking about getting 1 to go ahead and spoil themselves.

I use a combination of the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick and my keyboard. I mainly use the keyboard for thrust control and throttle. The stick has lots of buttons on it so I use most of the ship related controls (boost, targeting, weapons, power distribution, etc.) for that.

I bought a X-52 for all the upcoming Space-Sims and it is perfect for Elite... used a Logitech 3D Pro befor - a perfect stick for Battlefield and stuff - but due to the lack of enough buttons and cooliehats i decided to upgrade.

I knew that dead zone feature had to be good for something! :)

Its almost worth having a tremor so I can make full use of the options.. im a Scotsman so i dont like to see anything go to waste lol :D just ordered an EDTracker too, spoke to those guys and there is a bit of software i can use to work around my head tremor, and they are also working on something inhouse to help with filtering out tremors etc.. so options on options, and really squeezing the value for money out of it all lol

I'm an Xbox 360 chap, main reason, controllers are natural for me, but never had anything other than playstations.

Xbox con, really comfy to hold, PS ones make one of my hands ache (have a very displaced knuckle, a lesson in anger management)
Keymapping I have all the common used thing on it, works a treat.
Plus as I've been only back in work 7 months after recession biting me in the buttocks 6 years ago it was a cheap option readily available for me to go collect locally. That and I can hide it from SWMBO. #closetgaming

i always had the same issue with the PS controller.. always used to give me hand cramps.. 360 was always a far better fit.. i can see it working well for ED

input methods

I attempted to fly with my RC-Model radio transmitter, which supports USB output.

For flying it is awesome and extremely precise (probably because I am used to the controls in RL), but since it does not have triggers, it's meeh for shooting stuff.

Now I wait for my joystick to arrive (hopefully) tomorrow. Flying with a mouse or controller is doable but it just feels wrong.

First week I played with mouse and keyboard and it worked surprisingly well an accurate, but then my Thrustmaster T.Flight X arrived and after some time I'm used to it now. Feels just more authentic with a hotas. And somehow, thanks to that landing mode, I got all important controls working on that thing, which surprised me. Had to change almost everything from the default layout though.

Really is quite amazing how technology can be adapted.

One of the reasons I was so interested in Occulous Rift was the suggestion that its focus could be adapted to allow for bad eye sight. As someone wearing a pair of particularly heavy headlight, that appealed to me.

Not dived in yet, but nice to know the option will be available.

My control setup consists of Microsoft FFB2 as right-hand control, CH-Products Throttle as left hand control, ED-Tracker as head-mounted control :)
