Hardware & Technical What controller

Hiya folks, getting exiting now as we are so close.

I'm waiting for the Beta for my first crack at it.

What controllers do you think are going to work best.

I have a Saitek X-52 Pro

A lot of folks have been using your stick and it seems to be the weapon of choice. Very positive feedback on it so I'm going to save up and get one myself! So far I've been using an xbox 360 pad and I'm pleasantly surprised that it's working really well. Definitely worth a look if you're on a budget.

I really hope you can fly this with mouse and keyboard like Descent or X3TC.

I have a flightstick and gamepads but I am nowhere near as precise using them than I am using a mouse on low sensitivity and a 13" steel series mouse pad.

Xbox 360 controller for me, but I'll have to get something else come next year. What are some good options? I heard Saitek is about to launch the X-55 but I'm not sure wetherit's a follow up to the X-52 Pro or something else. With regards to price the X-52 Pro is about right, although I could be convinced to spend some more I there are good gains to be made quality wise.

SpeedLink Black Widow is on sale on amazon for 23 quid. It's much better than a 360 controller and does a fine job considering the price.

It has a rudder control in the throttle, which is a nice touch.

If my Logitech Force 3D Pro is staring to be worn out (as I fear) I think I'll invest in a Thrustmaster T.16000. The feature list and reviews look promising.

Then the real pain beings, as I would need to find pedals and an left hand thrust control unit, and those are hella-expensive.

Could someone who has an x52 please tell me the measurements for the footprint for both the throttle and the stick?
I'm trying to work out if my desk is big enough.

Thanks.

I owned the two precursors to the X52 and the footprints were about 25x25cm at the base. You need to allow for a bit of overhang, probably an inch in each direction, especially forward and backward for the Throttle.

My X52 Pro is 6.5 inches or 16.5cm square for both the stick and throttle (same size).

Absolutely love how they operate in game. Both are solid and responsive. The default key mapping isn't bad, but I have reset quite a few of the buttons.

I lucked out and got mine 1 day before Alpha opened.

That's one of the two I am looking at, that and the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X, still undecided.

The kids are getting me the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X for Christmas. Somehow that sounds like its the wrong way around doesn't it? ... Nah. :D

I splurged out and got a Thrustmaster Warthog Hotas ready for the beta
The misses is not too happy mind.

Had a look at that, beast of a Stick! :)

I'm getting by nicely with my Saitek FLY 5, it seems to do the job and it's footprint isn't too large for my fairly modest PC desk.

I was getting an X-52 Pro and after umming an ahhing over it and other sticks I eventually plumped for the Warthog and mine should be delivered tomorrow.

I had read many reviews and comparison, mainly from serious flight simmers, and the majority tend to agree that the build quality and performance of the Warthog is better than that of the X-52 Pro. Although they did state that the software was a little lacking in some areas but these reviews are usually a few years old so I hope some work has gone into ironing out these issues.

Something else that came up in several reviews of the X52-Pro was the location of the magnets around the base. Some stated that these were spaced too far apart, or too far from the sensors but that these could be re-positioned. Without the mod they said that moving the joystick at its extremes in a circle would actually produce a diamond shape!

These comments effectively scared me off. I have no way of knowing whether these were issues with early versions of the product or individual samples that were faulty in some way.

I'm using an old CH Products HOTAS setup and, for the first time in a number of years, I'm actually getting out the scripting language for it so I can properly utilise all the axis that ED lets you have :)

It's still a controller, but the PC drivers for the XBOXONE controller should arrive "in 2014" according to MicroSoft. So anyone having an XboxOne (anyone, anyone, Bueller, Bueller...) has another option to add to the pile. How it maps I don't know, but would guess the buttons will poll identically to their 360 counterparts.

Not owning either console or their controllers I have no idea what advantages they would have over each other.

Personally, and driven by desk real estate, I'll be with old-schools keys and mouse, if necessary I'll use a controller. To get an X52 or similar will involve buying a new desk, which necessitates a new study, which needs a new house. That would make this the most expensive game ever by quite some margin.

New saitek controller

Upcoming - http://www.saitek.com/x55/#prettyPhoto

Looks interesting, but unsure how relevant this would be within the Elite control let.
