What controls work best with new FSS?

Assuming access to keyboard, mouse, joystick, and hotas, and not in VR, what controls work best with the new FSS? I haven't been paying attention for the last few weeks, but I know they've made some changes. So now I'm wondering what's the best plan for setting up key bindings. At least a good starting point. I expect I'd want to avoid the keyboard, but does the mouse work better than joystick for some actions? Do some things work better assigned to an axis compared to buttons? Is there a guide that someone has already posted that I missed?

I'm sure I'm not the only that can use a heads up. [noob]

Thanks.

I stuck 'em all on my mouse.

Waggling the mouse around moves the view, twiddling the mouse-wheel adjusts the scanner, 2 secondary mouse buttons zoom in and out and the left and right buttons do other things that are probably important too. [where is it]

I found that a dual-stick controller, such as you get with the Xbox or PS4, to be ideal. In fact, I suspect the interface was actually designed on one.

Aye. I've dug out my 360 controller ready for the update.

I bought a knock-off wireless adapter for my x360 controller, and now I have to remember to turn the bloody thing on every time I start the game, or my custom bindings don't load. I can't be doing with a wired controller though - I have enough cables.

Do you know if there are default bindings for that? I have a controller that came with my Rift, but I planned on selling the whole kit as soon as I can bother.

But if everything works well on a mouse, that may be easier for now (not messing with joystick and hotas).

Found this locally for $20. Probably worth a try.

MMO mouse. All functions can be on the keypad.. left and right buttons used to change frequency.

You get really proficient at it and can see it for what it is :)

The important keys are zoom in, zoom out and tuning +/-. Since one cannot control the ship when in FSS, one can use ship motion controls. I find they're best with a 'direct' control (like a button) rather than an analog control. (I use AWSD for my keyboard + mouse setup)
The second most important keys are stepped zoom, those fit well with an analog control (I use my mousewheel)

Yeah, I've found mouse best to move around (particularly after they added the sensitivity bar) but I find the mouse wheel too slow for the tuning alone, but works well for fine tuning along with another axis (I use the rocker on my Thrustmaster TWCS).

I also don't have additional mouse buttons, so I use the same zoom controls I use for the galaxy map (one of the pov hats on the throttle controller).

Yeah, I can't remember if I was using the primary mouse buttons for anything either... was there no way to set then without unbinding then from firegroups or something?

Without the throttle controller, I'd likely use some keyboard controls for zoom and tuning

Greetings,

I haven't dialed it all in just quickly selecting some controls in Beta to test. But one control I like for the FSS is the analog thumb switch on the Logitech X-56 throttle (not available on the X-55 as it was a mouse cursor). Of course with players using so many different controllers I hope that this info might provide some ideas.

forward/reverse = zoom in/out
up/down = tuning right/left

Being analog I control the speed of each and using a thumb I don't move too far makes this extremely fast. Add in the standard roll/pitch/yaw joystick maneuvers at the same time. Note I also use this thumb stick for maneuvering the free camera around the ship and they both play nice. I still have to figure out where to put the FSS/Cockpit mode switch.

I haven't tried the new mining yet as serious miners tested that in Beta. As for the PS4 Pro account I don't have a clue and will wait to see what new in-game info is in the controller setups. I was impressed with their initial DualShock4 setup when ED launched so I expect good things...IF those Devs who designed it are still working there. We'll see...

Regards

I out them all on my joystick, hat to move around the FSS screen, twist to tune, left and right thumb buttons to zoom in and out, that's all you really need. Incremental zoom I use little enough to put on keyboard.

I'm flying with hotas, but for the FSS I mostly use the mouse. Activation is on a side button, right/left for zooming into bodies, zoom increments on more side buttons, and lock on zoomed target also on a mouse button. Honk is on middle mouse. And yes, my mouse has a lot of buttons.
The tuner is bound to a rotary axis on my throttle actually and set on absolute.

Very nice suggestions here thanks. I will use my mouse for the most important fss controls, so if anyone else has a nice working layout, please also share how you did it.

I have a Logitech G502, which has a dual-mode scroll-wheel.
Click a mechanical button on the top and it unlocks the click-stop on the wheel so it'll spin (very) freely.

It's actually a really nice feature for the FSS.
You unlock the wheel, spin it either way and then, when you get near a signal-type, you can re-lock the wheel and tune the scanner accurately.

Could've been made for operating the ED FSS. [up]

If you have a custom .binds file, you will see a yellow exclamation mark on the options menu entry when you log in. When you go in to Options > Controls, the new control bindings will be empty, but also highlighted with a yellow exclamation mark. The tricky part is going to be knowing what to bind, as it's difficult to know what binds are needed where without using the controls.

x52 and trackball....

one of the toggles on the x52 has been remapped to hud mode switching and fss mode.
Once i'm in fss mode, a rotary on the throttle tunes it (absolute axis), the trackball steers it (sensitivity very high, so it's fast), the multiple buttons and scroll wheel on the trackball handle zooming and selecting.

This particularly works "naturally" when it comes to switching in and out of fss mode because my desk layout means it "just works" to flip the toggle in passing while moving my hand from the stick to the trackball or vice versa.

I'm keyboard and mouse. Stuck some in and out top 'W' and 'S', adjusting the frequency to 'A' and 'D' and move the view with the mouse. Opening and closing the FSS view is on ctrl-F.

I like how they give you so much fine control over how you want to customize your input settings.
