Newcomer / Intro What could have prevented ship jump into hyperspace?

Hi guys, I've just started playing Elites again about a week ago.
Just had my ASP blew up by a Gunship, I seemingly has done everything right and yet I can't go into hyperspace and the warning "please align ship with trajectory" keeps flashing on my screen. I will explain the situation as best as I could, hopefully I will find out what killed me.

  1. My ship IS aligned with the jump trajectory, I have the tragetted system right at the center of my cursor. It stayed at the center of my cursor for at least 10 secs before I got blown up.
  2. The FSD is fully charged.
  3. My canopy is compromised, but only suffered cracks and the life support has not kicked in.
  4. I'm at max speed, as I boost whenever possible
  5. My hull strength is at 4% last checked, I don't not which module malfunctioned. But my thruster is still working for sure.

I simply cannot think of what is missing here, hopefully someone can drop me some insight to prevent another horrible death. Thanks i advance.

Sounds like your ship had a vertical or lateral component to its current trajectory - in that case you are not travelling in a straight line towards the destination.

You're asked to align with the current trajectory, not the jump direction. Your current trajectory is the direction where your ship is moving, which is not necessarily the same as the direction where your ship is pointing. The easiest way to align with the current trajectory is to make sure Flight Assist is on and then center all directional controls (pitch, yaw, vertical thrust and lateral thrust).

I don't think my FA is off, or else I will be having a hard time just to aim at the targeted system. The vertical or lateral thrust direction is probably the cause of my demise, as I locked on to the system I'm trying to jump to I made quire a tight bend. Thanks for clearing that up. Cheers!

The asp is a big, heavy ship. Espescially if you boosted when turning towards the target you end up with a lot of drift, and until that is countered you cant jump: you're looking in the right direction but your ship is going someplace else. :p

Yeah the bigger the ship the more this happens. Boost once pointing in the jump direction will normally sort it out, as mentioned above it is caused by the ship turning fast but the direction of travel has yet to correct, often known as drift. Once you have a Clipper you really need to adjust for it as a fast big ship drifts like...a lot.

Not sure if this could have been what happened, but sometimes when I'm attempting to jump after being interdicted, I get this thing where I'm at full throttle but it doesn't seem to be recognized. I use a HOTAS set-up and the way I get past it is to back off the throttle and quickly return it to fully forward. That triggers the jump. Not sure what causes it to stick though.

Even though this thread is old but I just started getting this issue. I had my Cutter for a day now and EVERY time I need to jump I kept getting that message. I didn't have any issue with any other ship that I had, Sidewinder, Viper/Cobra IV, Adder (I really don't remember this ship very forgettable), Diamondback Scout, Asp Explorer, T6, T7 and Python. None of them caused me this issue or at least long enough for me to care. What I have noticed with the Cutter is that when aligned and my speed is greater than my max speed, I have to wait for it to come down to my max speed to jump. That was why I thought it was some type of bug. I have not noticed drifting since my ship seemed to always be on point for the jump, but just the speed was greater than max.

How can I verify drift, if I'm pointing at the target and I don't see the target moving relative to my dot?

The few times I've had this happen boosting toward the target got me out of the drift enough to jump. But not in a Cutter, they might drift a bit longer, I'm not sure.

I think it's viewing your end destination and not the next Next Waypoint. Try selecting BACKSPACE (as default) for next waypoint.
