What did I do, officer?

I am very careful with my fire discipline when I bounty hunt at extraction sites, but sometimes I'll engage a Wanted ship, and instantly I notice a bunch of other ships turn red on my radar. "Hmmm... okay, target rich environment", I think - but they are security ships and although I'm still clean, once my taget is taken care of they attack me. What's going on here? :)

I definitely didn't hit them and I'm still clean.

Very likely they're of the same faction. You can check once you've scanned them. And if that's the case, going red doesn't necessarily mean going hostile.

Hope that helps.

Were you allied to the faction of the Wanted ship? There's a bit of a bug at the moment where the Wanted flag does not trump faction reputation as perhaps it should. SC out and back in again to "reset" it.

Yeah, this is dumb and probably needs to be sorted out. What happens is, every NPC is in one faction or another. If you shoot one guy in that faction, bounty or not, everyone in that faction turns 'red' or 'hostile'.... except they don't actually go hostile most of the time. They'll go red but usually they'll just fly around you in circles, or even just continue doing what they were doing beforehand regardless. On rare occasions, if you shoot someone affiliated with one of the major factions, and that faction's police are on grid, they might start shooting you, but most of the time they'll just keep repeating 'lining up attack run' without ever actually making an attack run.

I'm not sure how the code works here, but it's probably related to when you're doing conflict zones and you pick a side, everyone on the side you didn't pick instantly becomes hostile. I'm sure they can fix it though, in the meantime, just be careful - if someone goes hostile and starts shooting at you, and they have no bounty, best course of action is to jump out. If you don't feel like you've had enough fun yet, just loop straight back in and everything should be reset.
