It wasn't really needed in the beta since diseases were turned off. I'm guessing from the tutorial you'll need to quarantine any new animals you buy before putting them into your zoo, and any sick animals will also maybe go in there.
However putting an animal in quarantine also filled up their food and water needs, so sometimes when my animals were dying of hunger/thirst because they refused to take care of themselves, I'd put them in there to save them.

Oh good not just me then! Was it turned off? one of my wolves was reported sick during Beta in Career Mode. Sending it to the vet did remove the disease, I didn't need to research it before hand.
I had one animal arrive in my park injured and I had one with a disease. I was sort of testing out the quarantine by moving animals into it before placing them and once it detected they were injured took them to the vet and cured them. Then one came up and said one had a disease (I think it was Guardia maybe). Without putting it in quarantine there's no way to tell. I assume in the full version I would have to research the disease to cure it but in beta the vet did it really quick. I know diseases were turned off so not sure how that one got through. I believe it was a frontier sold animal. I'm thinking they will sometimes use their animals to introduce disease to your zoo if you don't use the quarantine.
Did you have to research the disease to cure your animal?
