Newcomer / Intro What DLC do I need to do planetary landings?

Hi, I 1st played ED in 2014 till 2016, haven't played since but have decided to play again. I own the base game, no DLC. I want to do planetary landings but I think I need a DLC, I know of Horizons and Odyssey DLC. Which do I need? Btw if it's Horizons, I can't find Horizons to buy on Steam, Odyssey is available though.

I play in VR and the on foot parts of the game (I believe Odyssey allows that) don't interest me as they are in 2D. I just want flying around in a space ship and landing on planets in a buggy.

tl;dr I own the base game, do I need to buy a DLC to do planetary landings?

If you just want to land on planets and drive around in your SRV, you don't need to buy anything else as the Horizons DLC has been folded into the base Elite Dangerous game. Good deal, right? :)

When you install Elite, you should now see two versions: Elite Dangerous 3.8 & 4.0. 3.8 is the old version without the added Odyssey graphical chrome and other improvements. This is a good choice if your PC is struggling to run 4.0.

4.0 is the new base game, with all the Odyssey bells and whistles but for space legs (that you will need Odyssey for). 3.8 won't be receiving any more improvements outside of critical bug fixes. 4.0 will be updated along with Odyssey.

Great explanation, it's appreciated, thanks!

Don’t let @RooksBailey fool you, since you last played virtually everything has changed.

More ships, new interfaces, existing ships have changed and additional slots, modules have been removed repurposed or upgraded, we can buy mobile stations called Fleet Carriers for only a few billion credits, we have Thargoids on the loose and ranks no longer stop at Elite.

As you have the base game and don’t want to walk around the shops or sample the new plant life you won’t need to buy anything. Horizons which got merged into the base game some time ago and the Odyssey lite aka Horizons 4.0 will download themselves as a free update when you next login to the launcher.

You will have to redo and add an awfull lot of bindings when they eventually finish.

Sounds great! Just now I've briefly had a go with 4.0, done some training missions to get myself reacquainted. I'm basically starting from scratch skills wise but i think it has remembered my ships and credits etc. I remember how great this game was, i only stopped playing due to real life stuff that needed my attention more than gaming but now i have the free time to sink into it. I have a HOTAS but today i've just been using an xbox controller, it was ok. May set my HOTAS back up though.
