what do i need to do to gain ground/influence for my faction?

my faction recently got to Lamgani(only system) i did notice that there is one faction that controls all the stations but one planetary hub, im focusing on taking the hub because my faction needs a station of sorts to turn in missions and such without being attacked entering stations.. the planetary station is called "Vancouver Keep" im wanting to push the faction controlling it out and move mine in. how do i go about that?

I'm currently doing similar. I like the BGS.

If you want to take over control of another factions base, you need to initiate a war or civil war. You do this by bringing your influence up to the same as the other faction.
If the faction is below your own influence then you need to bring them up to your level.

To increase yours or the other factions influence, you simply need to do missions that have 'influence boost' as the payment.

Everything you do to effect influence is calculated every 24 hours, currently at about 4PM each day.

A good site that I use to understand the BGS is this one. It's more up to date too.

These are ok too.

Yup, as DC says, any war or election in the system will spawn a "conflict" for the station or asset in your example. And this is done by equalising the percentages. This is the influence number given in the system map.

DC's links should give a coverage of what works best and how to fill all your buckets. Be aware that it's much harder if there is random traffic interacting with the other faction at their stations, and if you find they are in control, then the conflict will be for system control as well as an asset.

Feel free to post more questions if there isn't enough info in the great links above, and good luck.

... and both factions need to be >7,5%. "asset" control conflict can be war, civil war (as staed above) or election.
