What do the "thermal weapons" look like in-game?

Was coming back from a mining trip in my trusty T6 when I was interdicted for my "juicy cargo" and the NPC was correct. Among my 60 tons of ore was 23 Painite and 18 Platinum.

The NPC (latter revealed to be in a DBS) tried once and I submitted, boosted, low waked back to my destination. He tries again so I go for the mini-game knowing if I win he will leave me alone. Well I started to lose, submitted but not in time...I guess...and went into a awful "lose interdiction spinout". Has FD changed the graphics for this lately - worst one I have been in.

Anyway done spinning and start boosting and he actually lands some shots on me before I could gain some separation. Glad I had 4C Bi-Weaves. During the process (and I am not 100% sure if the message was before or after he started to shoot) I am told I am "overheating." Didn't look to see how bad (no smoke or sparks though) and got away. Just to complete the long story he tried again and was blown up by station security.

Anyway has anyone overheated from losing the interdiction mini-game? I wouldn't think so so that leaves the dreaded "thermal weapons" that are all the buzz.
Do NPC's use them?
In action do they look like regular lasers but cause both shield damage and heat build-up?

Yeah NPC's do use 'em. When they're a beam laser, it's a slightly darker shade of red than usual, and contact emits a rusty red cloud on your hull.

Thanks Goose. The laser blasts did look different but I haven't been shot up in a while - I will pay closer attention next time. Assuming this gets to be a serious issue I will guess Heatsinks are a good (only) defense?

And thanks artigan. I did try to boost (learned that trick here as a matter of fact) but it didn't do anything. Maybe it's been a while but the spinout sure looked (and sounded) worse then it used to.

There are rumors that in the next patch you will start taking shield damage from losing an interdiction, or from submitting. It appeared during one of the Gamescom videos that that was happening. I really hope it was just something they were testing, and not something that will, in fact, happen.

That would be...even more annoying than interdictions already are. And they are already over the top annoying.

I just assumed that was from the two ships colliding after interdiction up drop out as larger ships tend to do.

Shield loss to losing the mini-game I can live with (I suppose) but losing some shields to merely submitting makes zero sense to me as you are just dropping out of SC.
Guess I didn't see that video.
