What do you do on long super cruise trips?

As immersive as it is, it gets boring just looking at your destination grow bigger. On a monitor, you can alt tab and do what you want. In EVE (oh no, did he just save EVE. Oh my god, zeus strike him dead now!! Thor hit him with your hammer!! etc.), you can bring up an ingame browser and search for what you want.

While wearing the Rift, well, there's not much to do. I suppose I could take it off, but that's not ideal because it takes about a good 15+ seconds to put it on and get it just right -- terrible putting it on and taking it off all the time.

So, do any of you have any suggestions or ideas or just things that you do when on those long 10,000ls+ supercruise destinations while wearing the rift?

Looking at the galaxy map worked for a bit... but that got boring quickly.

I tend to minimize installation and removal of the Rift due to potential issues with scratching the lens ( Oculus had some issues with dk2 in this regard), even if you aren't worried about actual damage to the rift, you have the problems of steaming up lens, getting sweat on them or just flakes of dust each time. So generally I just sit there and wait, sometimes i'll check out galaxy/system map, but as you point out eventually you get bored anyway.

My best advice is to queue up podcasts or audio books to listen while you play. I believe its possible to set up some control of audio via Voice Attack, but haven't looked into it. Of course in an ideal world Frontier would have implemented a audio player or perhaps even a video player ( stick it on that panel between your legs) to hel- pass the time on some of those very long SC ( 15-40 mins )

For that reason i launch elite dangerous out of virtual desktop.
You can alt-tab out of the game and browse the web - check for better trade routes or whatever.
Works like a charm.

Do you mean this http://www.vrdesktop.net/ ?
Looks interesting and very useful. Does alt-tab really work though? I was under the impression that only one Oculus application could be open at a time.

I can only hope that thing in the middle of your legs is meant for something.... why put a screen on it!!! Something has to be on the way.... something!!

Thanks guys! Finally got around to trying it and it looks like I finally have a solution to keep all my notes and spreadsheets up with the Rift on.

Now to get a good voice dictation software ;-)

I ran out of fuel last night after a series of purple stars with no stations. I decided to point my ship at the last destination and just let it fly in supercruise. I watched it for the first hour or so then went to get some sleep. I checked around 7 hours later (roughly half way through) and there was a message telling me that my ship had been destroyed. Oh, well.

I set Elite Dangerous graphics to run on "Borderless".

So usually on long trips, I would open the web browser to read or play some youtube videos.

For that 90 minute trip to Hutton Orbital at Alpha Centauri,
I made some dinner an ate at the desk, then went to the toilet for a bit.

90 minute? Is that a joke?

I get up and walk around my cobra. Tried sitting in the passenger seat once, but fell on the floor on my butt (kidding). Actually I did try, but lost positional tracking before reaching the seat.

Use Voice Attack, it's specially designed for this. You can also configure it to make whatever Microsoft TTS voice you have as default to respond (e.g. command it to "retract landing gear" and it will do that and (if you want, for feedback) acknowledge whatever you set as an acknowledgement (e.g. "landing gear retracted").

Have you heard of the Elite: Dangerous Voice Pack?

i grab my tablet and read one of the 8 official Elite Dangerous books while on those long trips, when i've finished those i guess i'll have to start writing about my own adventures.
