What do you get when you cross E: D with Space Engineers, No Man's Sky, and Minecraft?

You get an upcoming game called "Empyrion". You'll have a large mother-ship which contains two smaller exploration ships. You'll be able to build your own ships, build bases on planets, etc. There's also a survival aspect where you'll have to obtain/grow your own food, find fuel for your ships, and oxygen for your ships.

Here's the pre-alpha game trailer:

Looks like a fun game to waste alot of time in! Can't wait to get in and play around in a couple/few months. :)

What's next, how long it takes to complain about how longs it takes to enter the atmosphere.

btw, my innner gauge says those mountains are about 10X too big. There needs to be more air space.

Wow, that is one industrious castaway, what with being able to go from raw ore to advanced electronics assembly. Three hundred generations of progress done by one lone dude. :D

you realize the kickstarter for this folded in nov 14

The kickstart campaign was cancelled by the creator, however they moved to direct release instead after a partnership with a modding company via steam.

Hi backers!

We decided to cancel our Kickstarter campaign because it will be impossible to reach the funding goal in the remaining time. However, the development of Empyrion will NOT stop! We have a vision and we want to realize it! We made good progress with the game in the last weeks and we are confident that we will be able to release the Alpha of Empyrion in spring 2015.

We would like to thank all backers for their support! You were very active during the campaign with numerous comments and suggestions, which will provide an inspiring source for the further development of Empyrion!

We did not anticipate that nowadays a Kickstarter campaign without a demo is almost impossible – and our demo came out definitely too late. In addition, we truly believe that a lack of exposure was the other main problem that the campaign did not succeed - not the game itself.

We will keep you posted with further updates and possibilities how you can support...

The Alpha release on Steam is still scheduled for spring 2015!

It is our great pleasure to announce that Eleon Game Studios has partnered with "The Modding Asylum: Empyrion Project" - an independent group of highly talented artists, modelers, programmers and concept artists. It is because of their passion for wanting to see Empyrion become reality that they contacted us shortly after the Kickstarter and offered their assistance with 3D models, textures, programming support and their expert advice. We have just a few examples of the amazing work they have been doing below.

There are already a handfull of these games... and so far they all suck. Elite is sadly the only one in its genre to come to a real release (debatable) and recieve continued patches (hopefully). All the others are essentially vaporware unril until proven otherwise.

In before moved to the appropriate forum section!
I was aware of this project before but I decided to wait until I see more. Could end up being pretty good.

Have you tried Space Engineers? Possibly the best example of how early access games should be done. Already a great game, weekly content additions and they actually listen to player feedback.

Elite is never going to add any sandbox elements though, it's pure open world MMO/flight sim. They seem to be 100% opposed to any sort of meaningful player created or player owned content, and there's no avenue for player creativity - which is the primary purpose of games like the one that started this thread. Hell, Elite barely tips it's head to any sort of persistence, it's definitely not the same type of game.

At least a few in this genre (Elite is not in that genre), have been pretty fun, so I think it's a bit laughable to say they all "suck". Are they to Elite's level of polish? Of course not. But that's hardly the same thing. And some, like Space Engineers, are actually significantly better at Elite about some of the things both do, and definitely has great features of its own Elite will never try to emulate.

More games doing their thing cant be a bad thing, I doubt this will be 'the one' but then most of them aren't trying to be.

I'm keen to see how No Mans Sky rolls out, their current state is interesting but it seems entirely devoid of gameplay, so far.

I like games to be polished, but that has to go so much deeper than the look and feel. Elite, at least some people playing it, claims to be a sandbox, I myself thought it was going to be. It isn't and save for an expansion later, its not going to be, you cant really be a sandbox if you can't build a sandcastle ;) (or have any sand, etc..)

For a game to cancel it's kickstarter because they couldn't reach their goal is a big red flag in my book.
You have to be aware of the reasons why. You shouldn't discount a game just because of a failed KS campaign. They explain their reason, but here's the main reason why it was cancelled:
We did not anticipate that nowadays a Kickstarter campaign without a demo is almost impossible – and our demo came out definitely too late. In addition, we truly believe that a lack of exposure was the other main problem that the campaign did not succeed - not the game itself.

So, they are now partnered with "Modding Asylum" to continue developing the game.

Cool!!! Finally after years the are starting to make the games I always wished they could be made when I was a kid.

Exactly right in my view and the OPs videos are distictly indicative of the kind of imagination that I personally would like to see going into ED but simply isn't (yet). Problem is I see a greater frequency on this forum of dissatisfied players who yearn for more imaginative content within ED mainly in the form of challege. I'm concerned that this trend will continue and possibly precipitate the end for ED. Whether or not that is valid is irrelevant - folks enjoy what they enjoy in a game and absolutely noone can say differently. FD are making the game they want to make, sure, but if eventually, time goes by and noone is enjoying it they will leave in their droves and the rest will be history. It's some way off, granted but for example SC may be the alternative for many a ED player if FD don't keep them engaged and enjoying the game. I would love to see FD succeed and time will tell but I'm worried for their future.
