what do you miss from the Original Elite?

I miss...

Escape Capsules

In the original Elite you had to specifically buy an 'escape capsule' from a level 6 or higher Tech world which would be tracked by the nearest habitable planet and safely provide guidance to the nearest Coriolis space station. This came with insurance meaning you got a new Cobra class ship. Any cargo you had on your old ship would be lost but you got to keep your cash. Ejecting also meant clearing your Police record as the record was tied to the ship ID code.

Of course if you didn't replace your cabin with an escape capsule and you were destroyed you were tombstoned; start the game from scratch...ED definitely needs this. It annoys the hell outta me when you keep getting fines for 'murdering' an NPC or another player - they aren't murdered, they do a Cylon number and awaken on the resurrection ship :D just like you and I do - no wiped record and a nice replacement ship if you have the insurance.

It was never possible to get other pilots to eject and steal their ship/incarcerate the pilot to sell as a slave...your thinking of the X3 games there (though I do like that gameplay ;)).


Tech Levels
There were different tech levels worlds had reached, this had a direct effect on what items were available for purchase at the stations orbiting those worlds The higher the worlds tech level the more advanced items available.

From the Amiga version of Elite.

I miss being able to sell the alloys you scooped up from your exploded enemies!

And These too. I loved the feeling of going to the trade floor and weighing in some dented and burned Adder panels and whistling innocently.
 
I miss everything above and:
20. the feeling of traveling in outer space and of being alone in the void (no interdictions, no magical NPC that appear out of nowhere, no instant fines from millions of km away)
Oh yes this too

21. the exit point of the hyperjump outside the solar system and not near the star.
One thing I have been asking for ages, its the one thing that made it into the Star Rogue prototypes and made the whole frontier/ffe games better for it.

22. Hyperjump bubbles with lightning around.
yeah that tunnel thing is just weird I would love to see the entrance and exits to hyperspace like in FFE etc.

23. Assassination missions: wait for the target for days , chasing him through various systems.
24. Fighting in deep space , no Supercruise , no easy way to escape if you were intercepted.
Yes amd yes :D

25. Serious and permanent consequences for the crimes.
We need a criminal record tab added to the right panel so we can see our criminal activity.

26. The dozens of police's Vipers coming out to hunt you down.
27. ... there are too many other things.
Erm IIRC the Vipers in Frontier and FFE werent very bright as an example fire up jjFFE and sit on the other side of the station and shoot into space, yes dozens of vipers will come out in twos and instantly make a bee line for you through the station which is at this point rather 'solid'.

28. Gunboats and Frigates so the military actually take a hand when certain systems get out of hand.

today I hit Master for combat and got a promotion message on screen :)
(I've been away a bit so it's old news, but it will do :)
 
i miss the military lasers, playing as a group of 12 yr old friends 1 flying 1 ready on the missiles and Ecm and the last resort nutter ready with energy bomb and escape capsule. I also really miss the worry of watching your energy banks slowly refill while sitting quietly in an arnachy system praying no other small groups of ships bowl up to take pot shots at you. For all you speccy players lenslok, what a nightmare.
