what do you think they are for?

so, you look at the cobra model, either in the spinning loading screen or in the station menu, you will notice on the sloping side edge there is some sort of a moveable panel, taking up most of the edge.

I can tell its a hinged and moveable panel because of where the hinge ring is, and the slope of the back of that panel made so that the thing can hinge open about 30 degrees....

... so, what do you guys think they are? What do they "do"?

These kind of things bother me until I get a conclusive answer.

Right now I'm debating:
a) airbrakes for atmospheric flight (in docking bay, mostly)
b) fuel scoops
c) original weapon bay doors (kept on because they look cool)
d) deployable bays for special sensor/exploration equipment

BUT:
a) they already have retrothrusters for braking, atmosphere or not
b) the cargo scoop is already used for scooping
c) now they gotta be for something
d) then why don't other ships have them?

(see? it will bother me)

So, discuss!

Actually, take a screenshot (f10) and post it so we can see exactly what you mean.
Draw a big arrow on the pic with Paint to show us where you're looking.

yep, those are the covers for your heatsinks... the covers flip down to button up all your heat emanations for silent running.

OK, photo as requested:

So I wasn't talking about the rather obvious heat exchanger vent vanes on top (obvious by how they glow when a ship is overheating) I was talking about those mystery moving parts... that don't move.

or they might move, I just cant find a cobra pilot willing to let me headlight him for any length of time.

Ah ha. I see what you mean.
I think they are the reverse thrust modules.

Actually you can see one of the attitude/manoeuvring thrusters in the same module. The round thing towards the rear on the same panel.

I havnt even read the post I couldnt get past the first word "SO,..."

What's with this propensity to use "So" at the start of a sentence?

So, I got this new graphics card

So, I was flying my cobra

So, I was thinking about hanging myself

It makes the poster sound like a complete dullard.

I was reviewing a couple of cv's the other day and one actually started with SO, on the cover letter The cv went straight in the bin.

STOP ABUSING "SO"

So, so.

Just imagine that a stray shot or asteroid impacted your wing profile and damaged the thruster in the area highlighted by OP. You don't think that at the hangar they simply fix it, right.

Nooo, the mechanic chief comes to you while rubbing off his hands thick black grease with a rug and a funny expression on his face.

"Look" he says, "the thruster itself is just a bit banged in, the problem is the underlying routing for fuel. We'll have to swap the entire wing front block and hope the concussion didn't cave in the collector just out of the engine secondary manifold..."

Scratches his forehead and blurts out "it could be around 500~800 creds"

And you'll know he's ripping you off. So you're not going to tell him about the greasy mark he left on his own face...
