What does Ambient Occlusion actually do?

I understand the theory of ambient occlusion, that isn't my question.. I also have a general distaste for the effect because Ubisoft took it to new levels when they got their hands on it, ridiculous! (like your gun would have a halo around it projected onto distance surfaces pfffft)

Anyway..I digress.. other than stealing roughly 10 fps from me, what does it actually do in Elite?

Zoomed in area I would expect to see a difference in

A subtle improvement in the lighting in the shaded areas, such as under your arm on the flight stick and on the tyre treads.
Not particularly noticeable but hey, that's the beauty of having the option :p

P.S. Your remark about the Ubisoft games would suggest they are using a screen space technique which is prone to the haloing artefacts.

Just through the options MottiKhan

I use edfx to add fxaa and smaa but thats all i have going (custom profile)

And the screenshot were taken in the same session.. ie no restarting elite, just hopped into options and turned off AO
