What does fuel scoop hud number mean?

I get the fuel scoop rating when viewing in outfitting, like 0.2 tons per second.

But as I use it while approaching a star, there is a different rate meter shown on hud, and numbers obviously increase to indicate rate of scooping is faster.

e.g. 20.0/s vs 50.0/s

I assume by the notation that this is some X per second. But it can't be 50 tons per second - so what is the numeric value indicating? A percentage of your scoop max tons/sec rating? Some other fuel measurement value?

That sounds right based on experience then - HUD meter being kg / sec

Assuming fuel scooping rating when shown as T/s means metric ton, and not long ton or short ton, that's 1000 kg = 1 metric ton

Cheap A2 fuel scoop I was using for ferrying ship to new trade route is 0.08 T/s rating.

0.08 T/s translates to 80 kg/s - I was getting a reading of about 50-60/s as I didn't want to get closer to the star.

So it does seem the fuel scoop rating in outfitting is a max scoop rate based on some absolute minimum distance from the star, and the HUD meter is kg/sec - which means unless you have a really good thermal efficient ship, seems like we will never actually get anywhere close to 100% of the fuel scoop rating.

Seems like best estimate would be to take only 75-80% of that max rating

It refers to the maximum scoop rate... now it is important to note, that higher grade not only means more total scooping capability, it also means that it achieves maximum scoop rate further from the star. So an A grade typically will allow for maximum scoop rate without worrying about getting fried.

Ahhh, that is great to know. That seems best feature of an A rating then, the ability to stand off further from the star
