Newcomer / Intro What does Purchase Trade Data do??

In the navigation window I often see the availability to Purchase Trade Data for a system. When I click and purchase I can't see what the advantage is. I thought it might let me see the market prices in that system but i'm not able to access them. What should I do when I make the purchase to get any benefit from it??

It shows you the import and export routes for that sector. They are shown as coloured lines on the galaxy map. You can see the key for those colours under the trade data fiter. I think its on the last tab but not near my PC right now.

It also shows you what they buy/sell at that station and any others you have trade data for. Remember it only last a day or so, and you may want to keep buying updates if you're serious about making every cred count.

The trade map has never tallied with actual market forces. In fact I've found it to be completely incorrect. So until they get round to fixing it. It's not worth spending anything on

I look at the trade map as a rough guide only. The amount of times I have flown to a system right in the middle of the coloured lines that has one or more of its stations listed as exporting something I need, only to find they don't have it for sale.
i normally go look at the market board and check the list of systems that the station imports a given commodity from and fly around the listed systems. Eventually I usually find what I'm looking for but it usually takes a fair bit of flying back and forth

Simple go to the space station - starport services, the trade commodities and its the top right box where it says galactic average, click it and any systems you have been to within the last 24 hours or so should be shown, also any system you have purchased too.

then just click that name, and it will display what the price is- remember to look at the price where you are, and you can see if you'll make a profit :p

Fly safe and sell palladium!

What confuses people is that the trade lines on the galmap (and the information about commodity imports and exports in the trade screen) are generated from the commodities that are being traded and show trends, but don't necessarily indicate a supply-demand relationship. If you take a cargo somewhere where it is not particularly required and sell it at a low profit (or even at a loss if you just want to unload it) your trade will be fed into the equation. Do this repeatedly with large quantities and eventually a coloured line will show up indicating that trade in that commodity is happening.

The only trustworthy trade data is what you find out for yourself. Actually, common sense is usually a better guide than the trade lanes - take food from an agricultural to a small extraction outpost and it will almost always make a reasonable profit. Buy ore when it's available in large quantities at a good price from the extraction outpost and take it to a refinery, and so on. As you uncover really good trade runs note them down and go for it :)
