Newcomer / Intro what does RES refer to?

I have a horrible feeling that this is soooooo obvious, but I don't understand what people are referring to when they talk about RES or a RES point.

I'd guess resource extraction point, so a bunch of asteroids fit for mining, but some of the context around the use of 'RES' has made me think not....

Some Rings and Asteroid belts have RES, many do not. They do appear as specific locations on your nav screen.

They are mining areas yes. Because there's activity there, they attract pirates / criminals, meaning they're very attractive places to hang around if you want to go bounty-hunting / dogfighting.

It's like the space food-chain!

For the very reason they are pirate magnets its a very good idea for anyone interested in mining a planetary ring to go anywhere that isn't near a RES.
