What does your partner think about you playing ED?

Mine loves to come behind me and cover my eyes just as I jump into a system. Apart from that, she prefers I come to bed with her, but with a 4-year-old, the only time I get to play is at night. Her hobby is reading but she'll sit with me and watch if I'm playing a console game. She doesn't really care for ED though. Even when I'm showing her something gorgeous, all I get it "hmm that's nice.... anyway"

this thread ... okay.

my wife was a gamer too when it was ultra nerdy even among males. when she had our first daughter i draggeed a desktop pc to her hospital room so she could keep playing, complete with modem so we could broadcast the event to our group's bbs. this was before even broadbands were a thing. we were indeed extremely nerdy and had a lot of fun, and played a lot of games.

she never got to know about elite but i'm sure she would have liked it. she didn't age well, she got very ill and died after a very prolonged and slow agony that turned her into a nasty, selfish personality that made life miserable around her for many years. life's a . i have many fond memories of cherished moments, and she left me two good kids, i regret nothing but i don't really miss her at all, nor do i expect to share my everyday privacy with anyone else going forward, gamer or not. i'm living with my son for now who is an avid gamer aswell, and can't see the moment he goes to seek greener pastures. for me getting left alone is turning out ot be the hard part! 😅

My wife likes ED (if I play something else she complains...) and since she's a Yacht Captain, she was a big help navigating with Long/Lat on planet surfaces to find stuff and places. Also complains when I kill Thargs but that's another story  And..."why do you need another ship?" "you wasting Credits again...?" "now you'll have to go farming Eng Mats again..."

My wife once asked what I'd do if she started calling me commander in the bedroom. Got a good laugh out of that one.

She isn't a fan of the game in general, she thinks its boring most of the time. I tend to agree.

My wife said she was glad I uninstalled that repetitive Space Game.
Little does she know, I intend on re-installing it to try some repetitive FPS combat in Q1 this year. ;)

My dog goes into his crate in a huff when I fire up any game but with ED, he'll usually come back after about 20 minutes, trying to climb up in my lap, and getting all up in my grill. He's a terrier, so he fits but he sticks his nose right in my face so I have to look around him, as he moves to block my sight, and put a paw on my wrist. It makes refueling downright hazardous.
I now know how the Mandolorian feels. "Don't touch that.."

He's lying next to me now, whining softly and trying to make me feel like I'm the guilty party here.
I love my dog more than, well I better not say.
TAKE YOUR LOVING POOCH FOR A WALK! HE WOULD DIE FOR YOU.

She pretends to be interested when I tell her about the game. Occasionally asks a question to give the illusion that she listened :D

She thinks it's a total waste of time

It is a waste of time though.

But no more than Television if you watched shows like Strictly or Bake Off. (any BBC Tripe)
If she watches TV in that league during the day for the same amount of hours that you play ED, then you are both wasting time.

Maybe now in your 50's you two should do something more exciting with your time, like Antiquing or Dog ing?

Is it real?
It's based on the real galaxy yes.
So how does it know there are aliens on that planet.
It doesnt
So is it real
No its a game

On and on and on

Like you, I'm 50 & have been a "gamer" since I was 13. I've been married 10 years & just asked my Mrs what she thought of me playing Elite (and games in general).

Here's a summary of her thoughts:
  • When she learnt I was into PC games, she was surprised that gaming was even a thing and it's a whole world she didn't know existed. Out of her 100s of friends, she doesn't know any of them that play games. All of mine do.
  • Games don't appeal to her, but she feels gaming is no different to any other form of entertainment or leisure activity
  • It doesn't bother her what I do, 'cos whatever we do in life is someone else's waste of time

In all the time we've known each other, she has never laughed at my hobby, feigns interest when I occasionally tell her about some game I'm playing and 100% supports me.

The only time she has expressed displeasure, is when I started playing World of Warcraft with my ex & she said she didn't like it. I quit straight away.

She thinks of it as that game that looked crazy good in VR then made her feel crazy ill...

(Weirdly she was fine when I flew her around in Aircar taking in the Bladerunner vibe, and increasingly doing stunts)

On the plus side she enjoyed an ISS spacewalk, and when we saw a scale model at the Sci Museum instinctively said 'We’ve been there'. So that’s a +1 for VR at any rate ;)

I imagine if EDO gets a handy VR legs hack she’ll be asking me why I’m standing in the middle of the room with a controller. And trolling me mercilessly on her way past...

(She’s pushed me off cliffs in Minecraft before...)
