What Elite Dangerous really is

Greeting CMDRs!

Excuses for my English in case there are some mistakes.

After this latest announcement for the planetary landing and reading some negative comments about it, I thought I should create this thread to put things into perspective about what this game over all is all about (always from humble opinion of course) and put some awareness to the general public.
Let me explain:

This game is a dream come true. It is a technological and artistic wonder made possible. An idea that never before, i repeat... NEVER ever before in history has been possible to do this way. You have literally a freaking galaxy to move around and now that will be expanded with the possibility to go on planets.
It is something amazing, a huge achievement for the team to have manage to make this possible. And on top of that, delivered under the form of a very rich game which you can play and enjoy for many hours, not just like a tech demo.
Elite is making history and you are been part of it guys!

And don´t get me wrong. I am not saying that critics are not necessary or that some claims are not true. My point is that it seems that a huge amount of people seems to take this for granted and don´t really understand how freaking difficult this project is. FD is the only people that have been able to deliver this concept to reality to date.
Of course people are right when complaining that some aspects and features are still missing in the game etc. But you must understand that the scale of this game in monstrous. It take a massive amount of time and work to implement a project of this scale.
Somehow this state of the community remind me to this Louis CK interview:

The game has things to improve for sure, like anything in life is not perfect. But so far I cant state how great this game is, and people really need to realize that outside any valid criticism.
I am a former senior game developer my self of triple A games, and i am sooo impressed with your work. You are heroes ;)
Continue the amazing work and congrats to all the FD team because you are making history!!

Cheers

I agree OP ..

Standing back for a moment, ED is not only pretty marvellous, technologically speaking ..

It's a work of art too.

edit:
oh, and ps., and it's fun (if you want it to be)

Ahem....you do know they had a huge galaxy in the previous 2 version as well right? Except in those they had more ships and missions and planetary landings and...oh the list goes on.

I believe the physics were better as well.

Don't bother, the draught in Space Sims seems long forgotten.
You need to have a love for the feeling of a massive universe and excellet flying mechanics.
There is no other game at this point with the scope AND polish that Elite has, people still won't be happy.

Just silently enjoy like a gentleman.

And I bet they had the details and complexities of the ships and stations in Elite Dangerous aswell.
Bet it took the same amout of time to create that too...

Graphics were pretty naff though.

Also, the physics were so accurate they made the game basically unplayable for all but the few realism junkies.

Anyone for 2 hours of high speed combat jousting?

Ahem... maybe you should just play the previous 2 versions then?

2 hours jousting? What game were you playing they took a couple of minutes to kill though longer if you had a basic ship. Once you were fitted the combat was fine.

The main complaints are the fact that while the universe is big and rich, it's very empty at the same time with not much to do besides monotonous grind in either of the three very basic roles: Mining, Combat and Trading. Exploration doesn't even come into it given it's a VERY small niche in the form it's delivered in Elite: Dangerous. Are people right in complaining about this? Absolutely because it's true. I, for one, really appreciate E: D and everything Frontier have delivered and I can put my hand on my heart when I say I believe they will deliver the space sim of space sims in every aspect... eventually. But I do respect those who have valid complaints and want more to do, at least things more involving and less repetitive. CQC is a step in that direction but it completely takes a u-turn on what ED is: A space sim. CQC is essentially an arcade addon which is why a lot complained about it. Why not have it as an in-game area you have to fly to to properly fit the game?

Then you have Planetary Landings which is a great addition. I don't think anyone is complaining about the content itself but other nitpicks of things. The main negativity is the fact that the base game is very basic and from the announcement we're left with the impression the base game is going to be as is with the exception of some very minor core additions. Signal Sources are still rubbish, the missions are still rubbish, Powerplay is absolute trash with nothing that gives you the feeling of being involved and every system is essentially a different handful of stations with a few random spawns of RES and even randomer SS of every variety. It just all feels very basic and the sense of exploration of a big open universe is minimal at best. Stations are nice, flying a ship is nice but that's all that's really actually in the game at this point. That's the main issue that makes people so salty.

You are right, and Ed said pretty much the same thing in the livestream.

" [...] Everybody, all their lives they wish they wanted to be a spaceman. So you did that, you guys, you gave that to people [...]"
(sorry, he's talking fast and i'm not a native speaker, the sentence may have been slightly different).

This is exactly how I feel about the game.

see you all out there,
Commander Benderson

I played the original and hated the sequels. This is a miles better game even without the same amount of content.

That's your opinion however the OP is factually wrong which is what I was commenting on. ED has been done before I'm afriad - it's nothing new.

In fact, didn't you know all DB did was use the same code from FE2 and spring cleaned the graphics a bit? How else did you think the game was ready in 2 years.

The crap one that this one beats hands down. ;)

Except if you brought FE2 up to today's graphics it would kick the ass off ED though we'd need to work on your piloting skills ;)

This is simply the beginning of a long and awesome ride. I am aboard for the long haul. The money I have invested in this project is nothing compared to the fun I have managed to have so far.

Three editions, Elite, Frontier Elite 2 and Elite First Encounters and tons of ports and a few fan projects. All were awesome

The forum would definitely also be better if people stop posting funny videos calling people they cannot agree with idiots.

It is a sad place if they get away with it.
