What Elite needs going forward

...The 'Heatmap' showing plants and geological features needs another pass...
I'd forgo that, if in trade I could have had significantly greater scatter object draw- and spawn- distance.

I do realise that this is not a reasonable wish, since the work load goes up exponentially with an increase there, but it's quite... "disheartening" how for all but the largest stuff, the planets are completely barren unbroken surfaces until you hover, barely moving, at low altitude, for long enough to let things pop into existence beneath you (or, not infrequently, even not until you make landfall), makes surveying less about spotting, and more about taking blind-ish samples.

What elite really needs is more random things (and stuff) to interact with. To make the whole game world feel more depthy and alive. \o/

Flimley
There is a lot of it, but it's hidden, unbalanced and poorly rewarded if at all.
I was in a random system and there were some "satellite" POI thing. There are many of those kind of POI scattered in the game, but I tend to filter them as "background" stuff.

This time I went to investigate, you know, curious and all that. I never go there usually. And there was a mission. Some bad pirate were attacking to steal some stuff and I could pick a side, defend the vault or side with the pirates.
I picked the "vault" side, and I was attacked by 10krait MKII (for some reason) that I had to kill. The mission was poorly balanced and all the enemy had to do was hack the 5 or so node to win, and I couldn't kill them fast enough.

Now, I don't know the reward, but I would bet it is crap.

Also, we get USS and most of them have some story bits or mission to do. I remember trying out and some guy was there asking for fuel. Another USS had a ship who asked for repair. Obviously it doesn't work because how many people who are neither fuel rat nor hull seal carry around repair limpet and/or fuel transfer limpet ? And the reward are probably not worth it anyway.

All that content could have been a lot more interesting.

Seen that a few times too. Dropped in just for hits and giggles.
Exactly like you said: I didn't have the necessary limpet controllers with me, so I moved on. Great opportunities, poorly executed.
And the rewards, more often than not, are just terrible.
I'm hauling goods worth several millions in profit, and now I should drop what I'm doing to help some poor sap for a 50 or 200k reward with a module that I don't have? Good luck NPC, maybe the next pirate to drop in will put you out of your misery.

Then they're unlikely to be able to help with refueling or repairing.. :)

Edit: which reminds me to change the limpet controller on the ship I'm currently using... :)

Add one of the new universal limpet controllers to your ship.
Even if I had a limpet for it, that's still not interesting to do, because the reward isn't there.
Also, I don't need the limpet at all.

It's a mission you are supposed to stumble on it and do on the way, not something you just grind. And I'm not using a limpet outside or this mission. Especially a refuel and repair, since I'm playing solo, and refuel is pointless there to begin with.

Now if you could EVA them to your ship, take them to a station to get the right widget, or help them acquire one in some way (legal or otherwise). At least you would be able to complete the mission without having a ship especially kitted out for the job, which is what you need currently.

I felt bad when I investigated those POIs.. Seems wrong to leave someone drifting in space..

Reminds me to change the limpet controller in my current run around ship.

Either that, or EVA and connect your ship via hose to their and manually transfer some fuel. No special gear needed, just engaging gameplay, where you as a space pilot can properly interact with your ship, and theirs.

Or breached hull?
You EVA over and patch their hull with panels and blow torch.

That's a rescue operation I can get behind.

When someone is in distress on the side of the road, you can help out with the means you have on board, without expected to have a full sized garage and service station in the back.

Elite probably needs separating from the other frontier titles and putting on a modest monthly subscription model. To ensure future development.

That would work if there would be more content. I don't see people paying monthly for nothing or not much. Looking at games with a monthly fee, first that comes to mind is World of Warcraft. They have a new DLC every 18 months roughly. Plus there is new content and new raid instances every 2-3 months.

I know Eve online is also sub based, but I can't tell what their content is like.

Imo there is needed change of Frontier approach to communication. They do not need to explain what is planned (lore/story), they may discuss about ways how to do effectively improvements, what is possible (short-term), what needs time etc. But mainly there need to be direct feedback to at least some of players suggestions. Prime example how not to do things is thread asking feedback to engineering, has been started six months ago but there is nothing as a result for now (except silence ofc). My bet is that majority of ED players are adults, they can handle if you say that someting is not possible because clearly said reasons. I really miss that enthusiasm and openess which was present here when were devs were talking about game, obstacles, challenges etc. It still is present in some form (like last year stream with devs talking about scorpion, that one was really great), but this should be a standard, not rare occurence during year(s). Is hard to tell from outside what possibilities you do have @Arthur Tolmie @Bruce G , but this game and community really need get back some of love, open positive atmosphere and visible presence of this game devs.
