Newcomer / Intro What Equipment Gives Lvl 3 Detail Scans?

Supposed to be, apparently -

Level 1 - Honking the system

Level 2 - Surface scan

Level 3 - Detailed surface scan

but it's still broken.

I just wonder if the 0.33 Ls range for DSS shown in the outfitting/purchase screen has something to do with it?

Now that I started a new exploring run, I did scan one moon so that the scan was initiated at closer range than 0.33 Ls, maybe my lvl 3 scan count goes up by 1 when I sell the data...

Can confirm that the count only increases once the data is sold. But everyone is saying it's bugged so it probably doesn't matter anyway.

nah !!!! the lvl 2 and 3 are still the wrong way round and mine has failed to update as I explore more

Yeah, I think the best explanation is that they are backwards from what was stated once, by MB, I seem to recall.

What I want to know is whether or not these values (presumably the correct way) have anything to do with ranking. It sort of seems like exploration rank is not based entirely on how many credits we get.

Just to clarify in case newcomers are confused, the scanning is all working as intended, but the reporting of it on the HUD stats screen after selling the data is not. You still get the appropriate payment for data, your name on newly registered discoveries, etc.

To scan things you need:

  • Basic, Intermediate or Advanced Discovery scanner to locate objects - this is an add-on module that has to be manually activated. You only need to equip one - the difference is just the range *
  • Ship's targeting scanner for scanning the object itself (ie no extra module needed, just point at the object when within range)
  • Detailed Surface Scanner for detailed object scans, which pays more money - this is an add-on module, but works automatically by enhancing the targeting scanner.

* but note - when in the close vicinity of an object the ship's targeting scanner will discover it automatically. No extra module needed.
