What graphics card for ED in Ultra @ 60FPS?

In the next month or two I am planning to build a new PC (that's "rig" for you cool cats).

I would like to play ED at 1920x1080 at a steady 60+FPS on Ultra setting.

Current monitor is Benq G2420HDBL 1920x1080 60Hz 5ms.

What graphics card would you recommend?

Is it worth holding out for one of the new AMD 300 series cards? (though from what I've seen on Guru3D they might be based on the existing chips anyway, but I don't really keep my ear to the ground when it comes to the graphics card industry).

I can't see me having the money to go 4K any time soon but I would not rule out upgrading the monitor to a 27/28" 2560x1440 and/or adaptive-sync* and/or VR headset in the next year or so. *AMD Free-sync seems to be lower cost technology compared to G-Sync so perhaps worth going AMD in that respect?

I've only ever had AMD cards but have no problem going green (although Nvidia cards seem to be more expensive for comparable performance, in the UK at least).

Not sure I'm comfortable spending more than 220GBP on a graphics card so I will set that as my budget and work from there.

Might as well wait and see what the 300's bring. All except the 390/390X are likely to be based on existing chips (also heard rumours that a 370 might be based on a new chip - that should be good enough for 60 fps 1080p if so) however with better "binning" (the average quality of computer chips improves over time) you can reasonably expect some kind of improvement either in performance or power draw. AMD might take the chance to improve the stock coolers as well and rid themselves of the "hot" chips rumour that is basically based on crap reference coolers. Prices may come down as well - rumour has it the 380X will be based on the current 290X. They may also be getting fabricated at a different foundry even though they are the same chip otherwise.

But yeah you've got a month to wait, 6 weeks max I think before we know what the score is. If you can't wait that long then the 290 and 290X are great value but the 970 isn't half bad either.

If you have the patience, perhaps wait until the release of the Nvidia GTX 980 TI (GM 200) ? At this time (september ?) you can choose a GTX 970 of high quality, because the price will go down, on all the range of the GTX ?

If you want one right now, I reckon AMD R9 290x 4GB would be your best bet. Should handle E: D Ultra @ 1080p hands down and 1440p too quite easy.

On Nvidia side the GTX780 3GB costs about as much, but if you're planning to go 1440p or above on it, you may have to step down from Ultra - AMD usually hadles bigger resolutions better.

Thanks for the replies. The recommended PC specs to run the Rift CV are out. So I'm currently looking at a 290 minimum more likely a 290X if I want to go down the VR road. I doubt if I will be able to justify the suggested cost of the 390s. But then there are other VR HMDs on the horizon and they may have lesser requirements, who knows.

Yeah I might wait, build the new rig now with the current GPU and then upgrade. It would be good to get something that will last 3-4 years. But the 390s were originally going to be out end of this month I think so it could be months before the 370s/380s are on the shelves and I would be paying launch prices - but it would be good if, as you say, the prices come down.

But yeah you've got a month to wait, 6 weeks max I think before we know what the score is.

I guess they will announce stuff at E3. Your graphic card comparison video was very helpful BTW.

The 780 is an older model though right?

Whilst the $ is important, noise and heat is a critical aspect for me. I don't want to have to have 5 140mm case fans running at full RPM just to keep the GPU cool whilst I'm playing ED, so any user experience in that area would be gratefully received.
