Newcomer / Intro What happened during this jump?

I've heard of Thargoid interdicting ships during their passage through witch space, but this wasn't it. I've got to get the bad news out of the way first: I don't know where I was, what I was jumping toward. Not exactly anyway. I think I was relatively close to the Pilot Federation district, maybe in the 30 light year region surrounding it, but I'm not certain.

So maybe half-way through the jump which had proceeded like normal, I was startled by a loud honking noise. I thought, this is it, I'm gonna see some Thargoid. Nothing happened, I wasn't indicted. Peculiarly immediately after the honk, witch space around me became quite clear. I saw none of the usual bits of gas or cobwebs or whatever they are, no other stars, no space dust. All I could see was the star in front of me getting closer, nothing else. Ten maybe fifteen seconds passed while I moved through 'clear' witch space and then I arrived at the star as if nothing was different. I hung around a bit to see if something would happen, but nothing did so I went on my way again.

What was that exactly? I've jumped dozens of times since then and I haven't seen or heard anything like it.

Update w/ likeliest explanation so far: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/what-happened-during-this-jump.546111/post-8485736

Maybe a really bad rubber-banding? Or the system you arrived had more than 1 star so you passed through one of them... not sure what else I can suggest...

I haven't seen it in hyperspace yet, but rubber banding seems like the likeliest explanation so far. Perhaps the 'honk' I heard were a bunch of object passing at the same time? 🤔

Also like I said I was near the Pilot Federation. Could have been busy times there.

It happened again while jumping into Cubeo. Exactly the same, I got honked (?) and witch space cleared out again. I'm 90% sure it was lag related as I saw a lot of other players on the other side, but that honk still sounded weird. I didn't get the impression that it was sounds overlapping or some such due to lag. I don't have a better explanation for it though. All I can say with certainty was that it was a bit busy there.

I think I know what you mean. The honk you hear is the first second of the arrival sound effect. Normally the arrival animation would play immediately (destination star rapidly approaching and more sound effects) but that doesn't happen if connection setup with other players is slow for some reason. In that case you'll see a blue tunnel (cleared out witch space) for a while until all connections are set up (or else you get a Mauve Adder or so). I've only seen this happen when there are players in the destination system but maybe a slow server can trigger it too.

Probably related and I think there's a general lag issue at the moment: sometimes, I'll try to jump to the next system, the FSD charges and I'm pointed at the reticule to make the jump - however, it will remain revving away and tells me to "align with the target" or summit, and takes a good ten seconds before actually jumping.

I'm also seeing prospector limpets fly through asteroids and expire a million billion kms away. That's probably something different though.

That usually happens in big ships with weak manoeuvring thrusters (esp. Cutter). Try boosting or reducing thrust to 75%. In both cases more power becomes available for the manoeuvring thrusters. Maybe you have to throttle up again after alignment is reached (message changes to: throttle up to enhage) though 75% is just enough for the FSD to kick in on most ships.

I think you're right. Interestingly the star does keep growing in front of you, so it does still seem like you're traveling. Should I file a bug report? It seems like one of those things that can't fundamentally be fixed as it's due to physical lag.

I think FDEV are aware of this issue. There are several reports in the Issue Tracker that mention the blue tunnel effect. Nearly all are about getting stuck in the blue tunnel at the start of the jump though.

This is decidedly at the end. Well, I can wait with filing one. Maybe when those other issues are taken care of this will also go away.
