What happened to the promise of Elite Dangerous?

Remember when a handful of prominent community members were invited up to Frontier to hang with the developers, ask questions, and get a peek at upcoming content? We were led to believe some amazing things were being worked on, but it was all hush-hush with an NDA in place.

Well, I'm curious now what came of that. Were those community members seeing things that have since been implemented, and if so, does that indicate more of the usual PR fluff like "I'm so excited"? Or have we yet to see the fruits of those efforts and those sneak peeks were at stuff coming in Q4 and farther?

Thoughts? Tidbits from those who went?

Pretty sure it was Thargoid sites (I think it was early enough for this??), guardian sites, and megaship interactions, and a few other bits and bobs we got in 3.1

I was just thinking about that that afternoon, i must say i'm curious too

Well, let me tell you what happened. They all showed up at the gates of FDev with their golden tickets then disappeared inside. After what appeared to be a bunch of unfortunate mishaps had disposed of all but two of the guests, Mr. Braben informed the only remaining player that he was in fact just that, as the other apparent survivor of the tour was actually an FDev employee he had planted to help facilitate a tour that doubled as a character test. Mr. Braben then handed the key to FDev over to the community member who had proven to be of highest moral fiber (we'll call him Charlie) and took off in a space ship.

Pretty sure some tiny people were involved too.

You kind of answered your own question with the 3 letters "NDA". Unlikely to get any whispers from any of the folk that attended.

Well, based on the content we’ve seen implemented into the game since that publicity tour, we can surmise what they all might have seen that would get them excited:

  • Thargoids – They do look pretty awesome, even if the “war” aspect is lackluster.
  • Guardian Ruins – Even though this stuff is grindy and repetitive as anything, they do LOOK fantastic, which is probably all the group would have seen.
  • Trade Tools – This was done pretty well, and I can see the group being pretty happy to see this stuff.
  • T10 & Chieftain – Both are very good looking ships.
  • New Planet Colors - I could easily see OA losing his calm upon seeing this, and I’m sure the group would have been very excited to see it.
  • Burning Stations – Yeah, these also would have been awesome to see sneak peaks of on the tour.

So, I can easily see how even half of this list would have been great to see early on. Remember that they most likely would have only SEEN this stuff, not actively played with any of it. Frontier is great at art and sound assets, no matter how disappointing new gameplay associated with those assets might end up being to many people. I doubt they took any time on the tour to actually experience the content, but rather just saw it.

What he said. ^

I'm 100% sure there was nothing more than what's been added or announced, no secret feature left.
If only we could take a peep at what's coming next year.

may the q4 update be good.

Just to stir the pot a little, the FDev reps at the Meet-up at PAXEast said we haven't seen anything yet.

The way it was said implied there's a large content drop coming (someday.)

I'd be very happy about it if it's true, but I can't help being skeptical especially after how 2.4 was promoted and then turned out.

Either way, nearly two years in I still love playing the game with friends.

"Winter is coming"
"We don't want to waste your time"
"It's going to melt people's faces off."

Sorry.. it would be better if they let the game speak for itself. As it is, both the game and FD are equally silent when it comes to a response. Maybe there isn't enough room for more feet in the mouth..

I think in June we will get an answer in the form of Bethesda saying "Hold my beer, watch this"

I am anxiously awaiting more info about Starfield too. I doubt it will be anything to topple Elite in the space sim arena, but I do feel like Bethesda could do it if they really wanted to, thus my eagerness to learn more.

As to what happened to the promise of Elite Dangerous: the promise changed over time. Something happened.
