What happens to dropped items?

I dropped a mission item (spyware) at a settlement before being scanned by a guard, but it disappeared after a minute or so. The mission didn't end in failure there, either.

What happens to dropped items? After being discarded, do they all vanish after a period of time? Did the item vanish due to a glitch? Does it get sent to someplace in the universe?

FDev enjoy when we don't know what is bug and what is feature. Lot of uncertainty. They must be huge fans of Heisenberg.
I hope one day Sag A will vomit all the lost things since the dawn of time :ROFLMAO:

Disappearing bodies are a real problem* - especially when you want to clone the access level from the guy you killed just a moment ag…. oh smeg, now he’s gone and you get no access. Awesome.

*So are the disappearing items IMO. They should despawn after a longer time (if at all).

100% agree I've been caught out looking for a lvl 3 access level.

An online game that doesn't despawn items/bodies would be a nightmare in a matter of days. A longer despawn time is reasonable, but no despawn is downright suicidal.

As for the bodies...they are efficiently collected and taken away by the Kumo Cleanup Crew ('Awkward pile of bodies? We make them burger off!")

The game should keep the items at least until you change an instance/jump to SC. That should not be difficult.

Yeah, that would be nice. I agree. The only issue is that developers have to implement features keeping in mind the users that will do their best to exploit and ruin things. It's always a balancing act between what would be best for the 99% of users that play honestly, and the 1% that are looking to ruin it for the 99%. Your suggestion wouldn't be difficult at all, but the potential for griefing would be absolutely massive, and it would certainly happen. Which is why you can see permanent ground drops, or long despawns, in single player games, but it never happens in online games. 🤷‍♂️

Absolutely right mate. I was about to write something to the same effect, but your post was far more eloquent than what I had in mind!
