What happens to players without the expansions?

I think they'll just simply instance off those players with different incompatible expansion sets.

Hope not and I don't really see a reason to do that.

If the did that the player base would become very split up since every single combination of expansions would be in their own instance making the galaxy appear pretty empty compared to what we'll see during the first release when everyone is playing together.

I don't see them being instanced off. But I do see areas of the game that players have not paid to get into being instanced off. For example, there is no reason by two players, one with the PL expansion and one without, can team up and do missions together. But as soon as they try one that is planetary based one of the players will not be able to join their friend on the surface.

This is entirely fair and standard fair for DLC. If you don't have it, you can't use it.

I assume the expansion pass is still available for the meagre sum of £35? Go and get it folks, you know it makes sense! :)

I would hope it's more elegant than that, or you'll get friends not being able to link up if they have different expansions.

Hmmm, actually, when i say "incompatible" i mean incompatible. the trick with atmo shield offers obvious compatibility. As for landing on airless worlds - thats a bit wierd why one ship may land and another may not. Sounds like a way to escape some pirates. So 2-3 incompatible sets would be enough. Though i don t like the idea of hard instancing myself.

Well for the planetary expansion, why not let them actually land, but on a featureless billiard ball-like planet. The whole planet's texture consisting of 'Tesco Value Planet' logo repeated infinitely.

I would agree with other posters when they say that the question of what happens when a player with the FPS expansion attempts to board a player ship without the expansion. It's difficult to speculate as we have no idea how such a mechanic will work.

However, it seems to me that the most elegant solution from the 'border' point of view is that when you try to do this, you actually find yourself instanced off and boarding an NPC copy of the ship, with the same cargo, loadpout etc. but an NPC crew.

The question of what happens to the 'boardee' is more tricky, but could be straightforward depending on how the boarding mechanic works. For example, it could be that a ship needs to be disabled in some way before boarding. In which case, from the boardee's point of view, when you are disabled you are simply destroyed instead (and from that point on the boarder sees an NPC copy).
