What happens to your character when in menu's

So there I am wandering a space station, I plonk my but down on a bar stool and I access my galaxy map;

And I start to wonder what happens to my character model, does the helmet flip over and go opaque?

Or do I just "stare" into nothingness, whilst other players are crouch-running all over the place, trying to get my attention in vain?

Do I get a spinning hourglass icon floating over my head?

Do my eyes turn all white?

A Clippy asking if I need help plotting a trip?

Also the same thing should be used in-ship when accessing non-holographic menus, and also telecasting in the SRV.
