Newcomer / Intro What happens when you die?

Hi All

I am loving ED. Played the original on the BBC Micro.......this new version is just the thing I have been looking for. But I can't help notice the pretty strong debate about solo vs open.........I am conflicted on the issue and can bring that up in one of the many other threads.........but, I have a noob question that may influence whether I venture out in to Open......as I have been 100% Solo, so far.........

What happens when you die? I have been playing for a few weeks now, in between life and work.........I have a Hauler, 200k credits.....and I'm about 40 Light Years away from the my start location.........but I have not died yet............and I dont have a clue what would happen next.......

When I die:

What happens to my 200k credits?
Where do I re-spawn?
What happens to any other ships I own left at other stations?
I hear people talk of insurance, is it an actual game mechanic, can I buy "Spaceship Insurance" in game?............or do you mean to just keep enough credits in the bank to buy a new ship?

Would it be feaseable, with enough money........to do trading with a hauler in Solo.....mining, exploring, all the "boring and safe" stuff........then have another ship somwhere, kitted out for war............and use that one in Open play if I fancy a blast fest............if it gets blown up, would I still have the Hauler?.........if so I can see me trading in Solo, using the profits to buy fighters for "weekend banger racing" so to speak.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance. :)

Insurance is automatically given free, equal to 95% of your ship cost.

When you die you have the option to

a) Buy back your destroyed ship, cost equivalent to your rebuy cost on your right hand menu
b) Be given a free starting sidewinder

You will then be back at the last station you docked at with your remaining credits intact.

It is perfectly possible to have more than one ship, being destroyed does not affect stored ships.

you will respawn at the station you were last docked at, that's after you pass through Purgatory or the insurance screen as its more commonly known. on that screen you have the option of paying a percentage of the amount your ship and fittings cost you to buy and getting it all back, or starting in a free sidewinder. you will still have the cash you have earned minus whatever the insurance cost you.

the amount the insurance buyback will cost is listed in your status tab on the right hand panel, its important to know that it only covers your ship, not the cargo you are carrying.

When you die you have to pay your insurance, you can see what your rebuy costs are on the right tab in the cockpit.
It depends on your insurance what happens to your 200k credits, but you lose money.
Your rebuy cost goes up everytime you upgrade your ship. So having no money and getting killed means you are bankrupt, I'm not sure what happens then.

You spawn at the last station you visited.

You keep all the other ships, you only have to rebuy the one you used when you died.

You can use different ships for different goals.

I hear people talk of insurance, is it an actual game mechanic, can I buy "Spaceship Insurance" in game?............or do you mean to just keep enough credits in the bank to buy a new ship?

in the window to your right you see rebuy cost.
that's your insurance cost.
just have that always or more in your pockets and you'll be fine.
if your weary about multilayer just don't do that close to a starter system.
the more you go outwards the more serious players you meet.
but also less!

When I die:

What happens to my 200k credits?
You keep all your money. You lose your cargo, and any exploration data, combat bonds and bounties not yet turned in. You are always insured for 95%. This means that upon destruction you have some options:

1) Pay the insurance (5% of base ship cost + added modules). If you want to but canot can't afford it, you can either disable purchased modules to reduce insurance fee or loan a maximum of 200.000. If you do, 10% of your income will continue to be deducted until youy paid your loan back.
2) If none of the above are an option, you are given a free loan sidewinder. You can use this to start over, or fly to another ship if you own one.

Where do I re-spawn?
The last station you docked. If you have any outstanding bounties issues by the station's faction against you they will be added to the insurance cost. Any other bounties become dormant, and will re-open when that faction scans you.

What happens to any other ships I own left at other stations?
They stay there, and can be collected by you. A ship transport service will be added at some point.

You can do that, your entire save can switch modes at all times, so you'll keep all ships in all modes. I personally prefer to do everything in open. It adds flavour and isn't nearly the shark-infested waters some claim it. Just don't hang around starting areas and rare-selling systems too much. :)

What happens when you die?

Good commanders go to Elite Heaven, presided over by the Almighty Braben. Everyone has fully kitted Anacondas, while Celestial Eagles flutter around playing harmonious tunes.

Bad commanders get sent to the Eve universe. :D

Also remember that all bounties you have earned and not claimed will be lost when you die.

I think this goes for planetary data too. It did for me anyway.

The golden rule is to check the RH screen and always make sure you have enough money in reserve to cover the rebuy cost. Preferably you want enough money to cover it twice over, just in case you die a couple of times in quick succession.

People say that but my experience was that i kept the cargo too.
Same experience here.
Some player dragged me out of SC. I ignored his chats (was watching movie on a second monitor and was too lazy to reply) and he blew my T6 up but to my surprise I got my cargo back with my ship.

I recently died twice in succession inside a station, ya know one of those days, with 50 T of cargo. Cargo in ship both times. Entering a station I guess I did not request docking? I logged off , it was rather late. When I logged back on and saw the cargo I kind of assumed it was a bug. Re spawning in the same station I happily launched , was rammed and crashed inside the station. I checked my death total just to make sure they really happened.

yep I have 9 so far

Yeah just get out in open play otherwise you won't see other players only NPC's and even though some of then talk to you you can't talk back at them :(
I personally I havn't met any reel human player who tried to kill me yet and I've been playing only in open since beta...

And I recommend that you keep multiple ships to keep the game from being too oneway like..
I personately have 1 A-kittet Cobra as back-up in my starting system, and 1 A-kittet ASP for exploring, 1 A kittet Viper for fun(killing pirates and ana's even a couple of pythons, and finally a Akittet Lakon Type 7 to play for it all...(Grinding credits is not the most fun, but nessasery if you ever dream of purchasesing your own Python or anaconda)
So aganin just get out into open play the more the merryer :D
