What I found interesting in Developer Journal: How to Manage Animal Behaviours

What I found interesting in developer journal

  • Stressed animals tend to hide.
  • Snow drifts?
  • Some animals stress with too many people watching them, if so they hide.
  • Can research bettter foods.
  • Well cared for animals have (1) longer life (2) raise young more successfully (3) more appealing to guests.
  • one way glass.
  • animals give hints on how they feel (1) lie down more (2) hiding
  • Animal grouping - bachelor groups, family groups, pairs, juveniles
  • animals have group size and gender mixes they are happy with.
  • Zoopedia - antastic player resource for planning and improving animal welfare. If you aren’t sure how to improve a habitat, or are unfamiliar with a particular species,
  • Mating rules - West African Lions, only the Alpha male will be allowed to mate with the females in his pride, whereas Reticulated Giraffes will mate with any member of the opposite sex.
  • Ability to introduce new individuals to maintain diversity of stock and avioid interbreeding
  • Animals fight - If you put more than one adult male [lion] in with an adult female then those animals are going to fight for dominance, and the winner of that fight will become the Alpha of the lions in that habitat.
  • Solitary animals - like grizzly bear, only a few animals tolerated in exibits
  • social animals - zebras and elephants neeed lots of individuals.
  • dung - rolls downhill. varies by animal
What did you find interesting and why? Love to here your responses.

I'm especially excited about the realistic breeding rules, and very intrigued by the quality food research options!! Each update reveals more and more in-depth stuff that I could only have dreamed of and would never have expected to actually see in a game. I can't wait to learn more and to see the E3 presentation!

The last update was definitely a good read. All those features sound awesome. Sounds like we're getting a boatload of depth.

Same. I'll be doing everything possible to tune in. I imagine BIS will have a perspective video on it, which I'll no doubt be watching as well.

Excited to say the least.

Is the Zoopedia something that exists currently? will it be in the game do you think? or like an external WIKI where players update it type thing?

From mjcarrier's excellent post here:

Zoopedia and Research
The Zoopedia is like a wiki that fills with information over time from staff research and is used by the player and to educate zoo guests. "It is a section within the game that gathers detailed information of each animal species so that players can expand their knowledge about those animals they care for." (MeriStation) "The Department of Biology of the University of Cambridge, who helped them make the Zoopedia." (MeriSation)

To add information to your Zoopedia PCGamesN says “You will employ members of staff and the staff will research the animals and over time they’ll perform research that adds to what we call our Zoopedia.”

I was just thinking more of the recent article and gave it another read. I found it's a great positioning for the Giant Panda from a gameplay perspective. Historically, the Panda has been less than cooperative for breeding - often having to go the artificial route to do so. They're also bad parents. They're lazy and only concerned with eating, rolling around, and sleeping.

Back to the gameplay point, the species presents itself to be the epitome of using mechanics to entice them to breed. Where other animals would likely have their own challenges within gameplay mechanics, the Panda would definitely be for breeding. If they make it difficult enough, it could be a Steam achievement.

I'm probably thinking too deep into it... I should probably finish my morning coffee now.

We cannot overlook the fact that actual physics have been applied to poop. What a time to be alive. 🤣

Seriously though, all of these features really excite me! It's already more than I expected and we haven't even seen any gameplay.
