I love that Elite Dangerous is an open ended game with no pre-set goals.
I hate that Elite Dangerous is an open ended game with no pre-set goals.
Elite Dangerous is a game without a reason. We as players must find our own reasons for playing. We may invent rich stories about our pilots or we may simply choose to have fun shooting whatever comes across our path. We may simply want to make more credits to buy and build the perfect ship. Is there anything else to spend credits on? We may pick a faction or a minor power and work to enhance or destroy it. We may choose to do combat with other players, whether those people want to do combat with us. But in the end, there is no guidances, no pre-set reason.
Without a pre-set reason, I am lost. There is no obvious goal. No series of quests that unlock a story; at least not one that I am expected to follow. The only obvious progression is to buy more ships. The only obvious advancement is to gain elite status and credits. These are not rich or deep. These are simply an indication of where we have focused. But gaining elite status does not make me better than another player, only my skill, my hand-eye coordiantion, or my time spend in-game makes me “better”.
I love that the story of Elite Dangerous plays out in real time.
I hate that the story of Elite Dangerous plays out in real time.
Each week we have a seamingly pointless distraction in a Community Goal. Each week we have a new story on GalNet. Reading through the years of stories on GalNet show a slow gradual story. Political intrigue alien invasion; dark secrets. A fascination story played out in the form of short news style fiction. A rarely seen form of story telling that takes years to unfoled.
Each week we must wait another week after spending less than 10 minutes to read the next paragraph in this painstakingly slow progression of an epic story. Even recognizing that there is any sort of a plot can be missed.
