So I've been thinking, as a long time sim fan (especially a love of hyper-realistic sims that require a 300 page manual like the Janes flight sims of the past) I've been thinking about what I would really like to see in Elite and quite frankly that is more of immersion.
Note this is from a technical standpoint, not an in-game/story aspect. While yes, Occulus Rift support is great and helps with visual immersion I find it also destroys my immersion by more than it improves by removing the ability to see my hands push the buttons and do the work. I personally wish to see less focus on the VR and more focus along the lines of say how Microsoft Flight Sim has gone where it will allow you to output different visual elements (such as your instrument panel) to different displays. It would be nice if we could output the side panels (such as system, contacts, standings, etc) to tablets or other monitors. Then instead of looking to the side in game and interacting with the menu I can instead just mount my tablets to the left and right of my present setup and look left and right and interface with the ship systems through touch. Would also be nice if I could bring up the galaxy or system maps on a tablet and program in my jump location while leaving the main view up on the primary display and continue flying. Given the low cost of decent tablets these days (about $100 for a good Windows 8.1 tablet) it seems like a no brainer.
Along the same lines, it would be great if I could raise the primary screen view up on the main display with the radar, ship status, and targeting off screen, and then output that lower control section to another display that I could mount below the primary monitor. Also allowing interfacing or outputting of specific elements to specific displays/devices. For example it would be fantastic if I could output the targeting, ship status, energy, or radar individually to seperate flight instrument panels ala:

And then completely get rid of the cockpit display.
And related to the cockpit view controls, it would also be nice if you could output more than just the side views to multiple monitors. If given my choice I would also like to see the ability to output the top view to a seperate monitor that can be mounted above and at an angle then similar to the kind of setup in the first picture here:

To me that would give more immersion than an occulus rift setup. Is it more expensive? I would say so, but hey when you're already in for the game, plus the $200 HOTAs, plus another $150-$200 for rudder pedals you might as well go the whole hog. But that is just my opinion.
