Any 'sensible' alien race would look to the local populace for first contact. If we were the first to make contact you could bet it would be controlled by the military - and I can't think of a worse scenario for us or them.

As long at's it's not the US, Russian, Chinese or any Arab/Turk/persian/pakistani or North Korean militaries we will be fine. I hope they choose Switzerland or some scandanavian country, but even the UK or Canada would have a better chance at handling it better than those countries i mentioned first. I mean trump would say "we are going to build a space barrier, and Thargoid tax money is going to pay for it".
