Seriously! I'd like to know because I use to state "beginner". Am I wrong or is it an insult or swear word? Educate me but mods please do not infract me for indeed HELPING real people needing real help. Cheers :)

Noob....newb....newbie....new player

That is all. I think of it more as a term of endearment.

Though, I'm sure many disagree...as does Urban dictionary in a rather comical way

They give it more of a label akin to someone who is unwilling to learn and prefers to be clueless. Generally annoying and just a step away from being a griefer.

Not sure what your post is about, but to answer the question: 'noob' is a synonym for beginner, and is often considered to be derogatory. As in 'noob chexorz m4 1337 skilzzzzzz be4 i r0flstompzorz u!!!!!!!!'

Noob = newb = newbie = inexperienced player. Usually meant as a tongue in cheek insult but not to be taken seriously. Some people say it like it's a bad thing while forgetting that we all were noobs at one time or another.

You might find that google is your friend for stuff like this in the future! ;)

Kind of like FNG, greenhorn, cherry, and all the like. But newb and its variations are a gaming thing. A derogatory term would be "a bad." As in "I just did looking for raid with some bads who couldn't figure out that standing in the fire was killing them."

Newb can be endearing or derogatory depending on the person saying it.

It is therefore a word in the eye of the beholder to mean a friendly term for beginner (as I use) OR just another childish (but harmless) insult. My point is - if you use it here it is taken as an insult. Seriously?! (Swears in private to myself).

Relax man, so you got warned. No need to make a big deal out of it. And yes, considering more people consider 'noob' to be a silly insult than 'beginner', why not just use 'beginner'. If you're not trying to insult people why take the risk of doing so? In general it is best to avoid 'comical' terms for groups of people.

its growing into newbie. but used to be different. old players could be noobs too, more like bad at the game + unwilling to learn from better players.

ofcourse that is hard to implent in open games as ED so , there is not really the "right" way to play, here i would say its a new player.

Newbie is someone new to the game, "noob" is a term used mainly by people who are inadequate and crave attention from their actions. Best to avoid/ignore those people.

Going by the constant stream of descriptions associated to my person in LOL or some other multiplayer online games, I am the definition of noob.
My picture should be next to the dictionary entrance of noob.

It is obviously a L33t-speak word evolution which is easy to type for the uneducated gamer masses and means everything from beginner, skilleless person to "you suck donkey balls"

A "noob" is what someone calls someone who is a beginner at a game. Usually the caller somehow magically forgets that they were once a beginner, too.

In other words it's a way for someone to feel superior when they are, in fact, not. All they are is shifted a bit along a time-scale from their target.

The term "L33t" came into usage in the mid-late 90s.

Compared to the 'old school' hackers from the 70s and 80s only a noob would use l33t. ;)

It can be used in a derogatory way.
I have called myself a noob many times.
I am a noob at mining for example.

Glad to be of Assistance CMDRs. Just trying to save you a couple points here! I now feel educated and will never use the "N word" again. Can we please remove it from the dictionary too to save our society. I guess I was being a "N..." not knowing how one would interpret it.

It's one of those things that offends some and not others.

There is a "C" word that upsets some folks, but not others.
There is a "N" word that upsets some folks, but not others.

There is a whole alphabet of words, that someone, someone where, will get their panties in a twist over.
Some people just live to be offended, while others don't give a darn.

I was always taught, it's not what you say but how you say it - turns out, in today's world of "triggers" and "sensitivities" it is what you say despite how you say it :(

For me every single player is a 'newbie' no matter how long u play u will have days where u mess up crack up or learn something new it's not derogatory ITS A BADGE OF HONOUR WEAR IT WITH PRIDE

So the problem is not the writer but the reader it does seem when most who read it not seeing any insult but just ONE will!
I vote a change of CQC "HELPLESS" to be renamed "NOOB".
