So the problem is not the writer but the reader it does seem when most who read it not seeing any insult but just ONE will!
I vote a change of CQC "HELPLESS" to be renamed "NOOB".

No, it goes both ways. Lots of words are like that, I can call my friend a ****, or a *****, or a *********** and it can be in an endearing manner, if I go to a bank and call the teller one of those, I'll be escorted out. So it depends on who, when, attitude, etc. It's just better not to call someone you barely met, or don't know a "noob", and certainly not in a written form as so much communication is lost and it could and would very likely be taken as an insult.

Alas it will always be the case of, the recipient decides if you've "offended them" or not.
And with society treating everyone with kid gloves now and having to validate every daft thought and feeling people have, it will get worse :(

Though, I will second the motion to rename "HELPLESS" to "NOOB" :D

(oh and not sure what others were told, but I was taught "noob" was okay, "n00b" (with zeros) was the insulting one)

You really cant handle a simple infraction, can you? In communication, everything is an interplay between writer and reader. Common sense, however, dictates you adress people in a way that is generally accepted as being respectful. Because that is how kind people interact in a world where many people from many different backgrounds meet on a daily basis. You, however, seem to misuse the answers of people here as some kind of excuse that you have zero influence over how other people respond to your noble intentions, so you can do whatever you want without taking any responsibility for it. Stop that nonsense. 'Beginner' is less offensive to many people than 'noob', so use the former if you care about being polite. Or use the latter and just be open about not caring about offending people. In that case, accept people might be offended, some of those might report you, in which case mods might give you an infraction. It is that simple.

Freedom of speech has gone. Even comedians can be held responsible for causing offense when it is there job to do exactly that at the expense of making others laugh.

I hope there is still a sense of humour around in 3300AD for humanities sake.

I think the Politically Correct crowd and the extremist liberals who are so far left, they are conservative - may have done away with a sense of humour.
After all, laughing could offend someone as they may be triggered by it due to a bad experience with laughing gas ;)

In the past we had 'etiquette', which was much more severe than 'political correctness' of today. Both share the same principle though: when dealing with strangers, use neutral language if you care about another person's feelings. In the old days it prevented swordfights, nowadays it prevents whiny posts on forums. While we all decide for ourselves where we draw the line I think we can all agree we shouldn;t decend into a Cartman-esque 'I say whateva I want!' nonsense. ;)

I can handle everything mate. I am posting to get educated and to warn others on here before any misinterpretation. So we have our discussion and is what society must have rather any dictatorship over simple words.

Freedom of speech is not gone, nor has freedom of speech ever been without limitations. Also, you are currently on a privately owned forum where there never was freedom of speech to begin with, as the owners of a forum get to decide what can be said and what not. Anyway, I'm off. Feel free to stand on your soapbox as long as you want, you brave warrior of freedom and liberty.

I would say, for education purposes, that words like noob, care bear, ganker, grief(v)er, etc. should be removed from the players lexicon within these forums, since any of them are really derogatory terms toward someone that has a different playstyle than oneself.

We are all just people playing a game...and as such...can have disagreements over the way we play...there is no real reason to stoop to name calling and utilizing epithets to denigrate those that see issues differently than us.

'Doncha' (sic) know this post was not to repair their bruised ego after a mod infracted them for being rude, but rather to educate us all on the nuances of communication. Abstract concepts like etiquette, common sense and perspicacity, they come at the expense of freedom and liberty. If somebody is upset by me exorcising my freedom it is unacceptable! Why should they have freedoms just because I do?

Noob and troll can both be used to be rude or insulting as could any words. It's really all down to the context and apparent intent of the whole sentence.

Remember Wheaton's Law and you'll generally be in the clear.

X-Terminator, if you have questions about a moderator action, contact us privately, don't try and wrap it up in a thread like this.

I'll close this before it tips over into the realms of contesting a moderator action.
