What is Elite: Dangerous?

Hey everyone,

I have been fairly confused about what elite dangerous is in terms of genre.

I know that it is a Space Sim akin to privateer but is it a experience like DayZ where you can jump from server to server and keep your characters, Items, Ships, etc. on each server or it is a more traditional game Similar to Guild Wars with a centralized server.

So in short Hive Server akin to DayZ (With Players hosting servers?) or a more centralized sever akin to Guild Wars 2 or Planetside 2.

Second I need to ask will there be a modding SDK?

Third if there is a centralized server will there be a monthly fee to play elite?

I am ready to spend money on Elite just I need to know more about it and how it functions.

Thank you for your time,

HeadClot

Hello Headclot. Welcome to the forums.
Well, for the online experience (either single player or multiplayer) the universe will be maintained by Frontier so the events will come from that. Some generated some injected so for example if everyone trades in a particular comodity then it will be worth less as more of it is available etc.

Yes the genre is space sim and it is open world. Elite (as Elite Dangerous is Elite IV) started the entire space sim open world genre so you are going to be backing THE title that actually started it all. This is a doco about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwA7eeR4WLA

Whilst there *may* be one in the future, this is not present on the cards as far as I am aware so the answer there is we don't know yet. I'm trying to remember if modding was mentioned in one of the videos though.

You might want to have a look at some of the videos on Frontier's Youtube channel especially some of the earlier ones, it might give you a better foundation for your decision. :)

Thank you for your time,

There will not be any monthly fees payable to play Elite Dangerous to the best of my knowledge. This issue was raised on the KS and was answered there in the FAQ's

Will the game be free to play after the initial purchase?

We do not plan to make it subscription-based. Once you have purchased the game up front, you will be able to play thereafter for no further cost. Everything in the game will be purchasable with in-game Credits, earned from trading, bounty-hunting, etc. We will probably allow the supplemental purchase of Credits with real money, for those who want to accelerate their progress through the game.

We do plan to charge for additional updates, to be available sometime after the original release. These will offer additional content, features and gameplay.

I hope this helps. :) and yes....all those copies of ELITE you see in my sig below (first 3 lines) I own. BIIIIG fan here. :)

It should be added if you pledge high enough all updates will be free for the life of the game. So if you think you will enjoy the game enough to want the updates, pledge at the level to get them all for free for life. Personally I think that is the way to go and I pledged way more then that.

Hope that helps.

Very true. That is an amazing deal.

Thank you for the reply Styggron.

I have since made up my mind about purchasing Elite Dangerous.
I am going for it. :D

I invested about 80 USD in Star Citizen, and I am going to do the same here. Albeit starting out at 40 USD initially for the core game and name my commander. I want to see where this goes. :D

Adding to what Styggron has already said, the game has been designed to keep server costs below a level where they'd need a monthly fee. Instead the plan is to undercut the gold farmers by letting players buy in-game money with real money, paying off the server costs and reducing a major annoyance without creating any special premium content.

Some people have complained this legitimises bad behaviour, but personally I think it regulates that behaviour and gives me a free online game to boot :)

As my quotation and Andrew says, there are players that want to speed up their progress and they may be able to use real money.

Star Citizen does something similar.

Hey Andrew Sayers - Thanks for the Info.

Guess that means that I get to blow people up after placing a bounty on them. YAY Gold farmers finally useful for something :D
