My ship has been at 100% hull and none of the modules have ever been damaged, however I've noticed that under advanced maintenance that my integrity is sitting around 80% and will cost roughly 25,000 credits to bring back to 100%.

Can someone explain what integrity is and what it does? Is it worth bringing back up to 100%?

You can look at integrity as kind of a "hull hardness". It degrades by everyday use (mostly by supercruise travel). The lower it is, the lower is your hull's resistance to damage.
In other words, if you want to fight, it pays off to repair your integrity so your ship wouldn't become squishy. But if you're a trader or explorer, the integrity doesn't mean much.

Do not worry, nothing bad happens if it reaches 0%. At that point your Hull will be able to take 30% less damage, so it is worth considering fixing, but not essential.

Maintenance is wear and tear, caused by simply using the ship, like using a car.

As explained, it impacts the effectiveness of the hull when it takes damage. Lower integrity = weaker hull. I just repair mine each time I dock while I wait for the ship to enter under the pad.

When I saw the title "What is integrity?" I was expecting a much more philosophical discussion. <grin>

Note: paintwork is something different, as this gets lower the ship looks less new with more scuffs and wear marks. Some like this look so if you fancy a more worn look do not repair your paintwork.

Integrity and paintwork both decline at the rate of 1% per 100,000 Ls travelled.

Paintwork has no effect on your ship, other than making it look better/worse/different.

Integrity does have a performance impact: your hull becomes weaker and "softer", making your ship more prone to damage. In effect, flying a ship at 100% hull but 0% integrity is the equivalent to flying a ship at 70% hull and 100% integrity.

Because it falls at 1% per 100,000 Ls travelled, it is a "hidden cost" downside to running missions to long-distance stations such as Hutton; a trip to Hutton (6,300,000 Ls) will reduce your integrity by 63%.
