Hardware & Technical What is popcnt?

What is popcnt? Apparently my cpu doesn't have it. Who knew. It was flagged up while trying to load Apex Legends. So is this the signal to upgrade my pc? Not use what other software requires it.

It is an instruction to count the set bits in a value. This was introduced with SSE 4.2 and at this time most likely means you are running a really old pre-Excavator AMD chip.

Seeing how that instruction came with the first generation "Core i" CPUs, an old AMD chip would even be an upgrade in your case :D

Its runs Elite and any other game I currently have. Is Apex Legends worth such an expense? Where are all the Directx12 games?

After reading this I'm definitely going to have to upgrade my CPU to experience all the joys of the POPCNT feature https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-fastest-way-to-count-the-total-number-of-set-bits-in-an-array-of-a-ten-thousand-16-bit-integers. All purchase request have to be submitted for approval. Not sure if simply stating we want POPCNT will be sufficient.

Assuming then that the current ED doesn't require POPCNT. What benefits would we see if it did?
