What is speed out of Supercruise measured in?

Just curious, the American in me wants to think that it's in Miles per hour but that's not true, even using the Kilometer measurement the game currently uses is far understating how fast the ship is actually moving.

Is it in meters per second? I can travel about 120 KM in my Cobra (with boost) under seven minutes.

Super cruise will be measured in kilometres per second (km /s) at minimum speed, mega-kilometres (Mkm / s) per second as you accelerate, and ultimately multiples of the speed of light (C).

Whoops. Out of super cruise. Meters per second, I believe.

It refers to it as C because it's the mathematical Constant most frequently used in physics, as in the overexposed and often misunderstood formule E=MC squared.

Everything is metric, yep.

Meters/second
Kilometers/s (1000s of meters)
Megameters or Mm/s (1000s of kilometers)
Fractions of C, C being approximately 300,000 km/s, so that .1 C = 30 Mm/s.

Distance is measured in equivalent units in light seconds. If you're moving 1C, you're going the speed of light or at 300,000 km/s.

If for example something is 400 Ls away, it's 400 x 300,000 kilometers away, 400 seconds away at a speed of 1C.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'm aware of the speed of Light and everything in supercruise but I've had another depressing realization.

Voyager two's speed is considered "Fast" at 15.4 KM/s and the slowest this game allows us in Supercruise is 30 KM/s

:(

Factoid: 30km/s is just about earth's orbital velocity around the sun. Anybody want to test it by tailgating earth in-game for a year?

Even for the outer planets, probably a very good reason why we predict where planets will be in their orbits, rather than gunning straight for them.

My ship has big engines and a pointy nose but it can't go mach 1, please nerf space atmosphere it's too thick.

Kinda weird considering it's 3301 but when we're talking about the actual distances our ships are traveling out of supercruise it makes sense, probably some kind of safety net to ensure people aren't going stupidly fast when you're measuring distances in kilometers.

In game the voyager is not moving too fast (or too slow) to visit. I think it's stationary.

Just to be pedantic. C is the speed of light in a vacuum. Light has different velocities when travelling though different media.

Yep, and they've even slowed down light to about the speed of a bicycle by passing it through a bose-einstein condensate.

1c is about the speed it takes me to move, when the wife shouts me to do something i forgot about.

To sum up all the stuff said above and add some to it:

The normal speed you travel is in m/s (speed of sound in air, 20°C is 343 m/s)
SC speeds are 30 km/s < X Mm/s < X C

However what's important to note is all the above speeds are always in relation to the closest celestial body. Meaning if you "stand still" in normal space, but are close to a planet, you actually go exactly the same speed as said planet. This is also the case with Supercruise. A place where this can be tested is New Afrika with its extremely fast moon. Once you are in proximity to the moon, so your hud states its name as your location, you will suddenly speed up like crazy and zoom around New Afrika, even when only going 30 km/s or even "standing still" in normal space.
Be careful though, it can at times be very hard to get away from the moon, when you get "scooped up" by it.

Measured in nerfs per second..

Aaah!

I hate that word!! Hate it!

Nerf is a 4 letter word! not to be used in polite conversation I say!

Other than that .. lol

Ah you see I use a slightly different tactic. My ultimate velocity is close to "C" but my acceleration is very slow..... I sit there for a few minutes so that she gets the impression that I have it all under control. Then when her back is turned I move like lightening!!! If only time travel were possible..

It's easy to work out manually. So.... If you leave the station at 0.00 (let's say for arguments sake) and travel in super cruise for 23.45 light seconds then come to a full stop and check your time. After drinking coffee, divide the time accrued by the mass of you ship, say 75tonnes. This will leave you with a figure which you then multiply by 140.43 and split in six equal portions. Like cake, although I'm trying not to eat cake anymore so let's call it a potato. Once you have split your potato into six equal parts cross cut them six times more and drop that into a pan of hot oil to make some super chips! Once cooked add salt n vinegar and all is well with the universe

So your off cake, but happy to consume deep fried chips?
